Hi, coiners ... Steve here

Ummm, I'm not sure if I've ever shown this cool lil' item, or not?

Before Newfoundland joined Canada, they minted their own coins ... here are some pennies from those days (the World War II days)

Sorry about the photo-quality ... photography is definitely not one of my strong-suits!

Cheers

Here's a recent pickup from Numismatik Naumann, Auction 125, lot 723.  For some time I've been looking for a companion thaler of Julius to go with the 1589 thaler that I've owned since 1992.  This is a nice coin, cleaned, but with a nice strike and decent surfaces.

Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Julius, thaler, '"Lichttaler'", 1586,  Goslar.

Davenport 9064

28.68 grams

This is the other wildman thaler, 1589, the "Brillentaler", Davenport 9067:

Very nice. These are right in my area of interest. The cleaning wouldn't bother me in the least.

I just purchased this as an upgrade to the one I have.

This one is on it's way to me. It is in a details PCGS holder for a "scrape". I can't find it in the pictures. For the price I paid I'm not going to complain. Maybe it will be more obvious in hand.

Something unusual:

Amulet, Qing Dynasty
Av: Zhuang Yuan Ji Di 状元及第 (loosely translated: The first place in the annual examinations).
Rv: Zhuang Yuan Ji Di 状元及第

The first place in the annual exams meant that you got directly a job with the emperor.

This is a lovely and educational thread. My contribution today will be a 50 centavos bronze of Bolivia. The emblem of Bolivia is quite striking and the toning on this coin is unreal. These were struck for Bolivia by the Philadelphia mint in 1943, but dated 1942. A one-year only issue...

Obv.: REPUBLICA DE BOLIVIA; Emblem of Bolivia: The sun, two mountains (the Cerro Rico and the Cerro Menor), chapel, palm tree, lama.
Rev.: CINCUENTA CENTAVOS; 50 – C; Caduceus; Olive sprays below // 1942
Ref.: KM #182a.

My LBJ inauguration medal circa 1964/5. Thing is a whopping 76mm in diameter and weighs more than 50 grams. I believe this was the template for a 2015 one ounce silver round released by the US mint.

AH, so you're the one that bought that medal! The obverse was engraved by Gilroy Roberts, designer of the Kennedy Half Dollar. He was a master of portraiture on coins and medals. Here is a very rare medal, also with obverse by Gilroy Roberts...

Brett.jpg.e55f3d79b7641cd57789c785ad9ddc5c.jpg

Bronze medal of William Howard Brett, director of the US Mint from July 1954 to January 1961. The obverse is by Gilroy Roberts, designer of the Kennedy Half Dollar, who throughout his career was a master of portraiture. This is #317 in Medals of the United States Mint (Failor and Haydn), and the catalog describes the reverse as such: "The kneeling female figure represents the Mint. Allegorical figures surround the central figure, depicting mining, assaying, melting and refining, and coining. The seal of the Treasury Department appears below." The reverse was designed by Engelhardus von Hebel. 3 inches in diameter, 217 grams.
