Roman Republic. C. Piso L.f. Frugi. 61 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.86g, 6h). Obv: Diademed and draped bust of Apollo left, hair tied with fillet; caduceus over shoulder. Rev: Naked horseman galloping right, not carrying anything; arrowhead above; C•PISO•L•F•FRVG, below. Ref: Crawford 408/1b (O34/R35); Sydenham 876; C. Hersh, NC 1976, 439 (O802/R2006); Calpurnia 29a; RBW 1481. Nice Very Fine, high relief obverse, small obverse banker’s mark. Extremely Rare. RBW example sold for 1700 CHF. The distinctive left-facing bust (rather than head) of Apollo, with caduceus over shoulder, is known from only one die (RBW note).

Reverse: Tyche with Kalathos (A kalathos is a vase in the form of a top hat, used to hold wool or fruit, often used in ancient Greek art as a symbol of fertility. The kalathos has traditionally been interpreted as a fertility symbol, reserved for goddesses or their priestesses) on Lectisternium (Lectisternium, is a religious rite of ancient Greece and Rome marked by the placing of images of gods on couches and the spreading of food before them) laden with garland resting, holding a rudder in her right hand
