Thanks, it's a type I've always found fascinating. No ignorance on your part, they don't turn up very often. The ancient Greek sphinx is always female and winged (as opposed to the more famous Egyptian sphinx which is male). As for it depicting a particular deity or being, I think it's just how each die cutter could execute a female face, rather than being based on someone in particular. I so rarely go after the AE's, but here's one I picked up recently. Is it the correct attribution? Antiochos IX Philopator (Kyzikenos). 114-95 BC. 5.4 gr 18.3mm And Sestertius.
