R is for

L. Rubrius Dossenus Ar Denarius 87 BC Obv Head of Jupiter right Rv Empty chariot being pull by 4 prancing horses right Crawford 348/1 RBW 1322 3.64 grms 16 mm Photo by W. Hansen

It is likely that the chariot being depicted on the reverse of this coin is one used in the procession at the Ludi Circenus to carry the sacra of the gods. The thunderbolt seen on the side panel of this chariot indicates that it is associated with Jupiter

I do have an unphotographed L. Sulpicius Rufus with the Brutus? portrait, a 1990's buy. However, it may be crystalized and I don't want to fool with it until my photos get better.  I do have another Rufus, but I want to save that for S.

Here's one of the better examples of my crappy photo experiments. The rose is upside down, I know.  It was a Christmas or birthday present.

R is for Rhodes:

Sidon Ar Tetradrachm 1o7-106 BC Obv Head of Tyche Rv Eagle standing left on thunderbolt wings folded HGC 278 13.7o grms 28 mm Photo by W. Hansensidon1.jpeg.613425c90d0fe1fad6068578c179466b.jpeg

Sidon received its autonomy in 111 BC but did not commence striking coins until 107 BC of which this is one. The reverse harkens back to the Ptolemaic era and its coinage. This signifies that this coin is on the lighter Ptolemaic standard.
