Edessa Posted October 11, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted October 11, 2022 S is for Sicinius. Moneyer issues of Imperatorial Rome. Q. Sicinius. Early 49 BC. AR Denarius, (18mm, 3.95g, 12h). Rome mint. Obv: Diademed bust of Fortuna Populi Romani right. Rev: Q SICINIVS III VIR; Palm frond with fillet and winged caduceus in saltire; wreath above. Ref: Crawford 440/1; CRI 1; Sydenham 938; Sicinia 5; RBW 1555. Ex-Eton College Collection, Sotheby's London, December 1976. Ex Old Roman Coins. CNG Note: Q. Sicinius, known only through his issues as moneyer, supported the Republican side in the Civil War. A later issue (Crawford 444) was struck by Sicinius for the use of the fleet commanded by Coponius in the East for Pompey. The combination of a depiction of Fortuna on the obverse of this coin with the symbols for victory and felicitas on the reverse signify the moneyer's hope for a Republican victory over Caesar who crossed the Rubicon, initiating the Civil War, in the same year that this coin was struck.
