  1. It's raining gold! Great list @panzerman, I really like the Dobunni stater. Can't wait to see your Roman list 😁
  2. Very nice coins youve acquired this year. It's nice to see coins that I don't collect, but they are nevertheless interesting. I voted for your first coin, because of the impressive obverse. But also doubted to go for the Mazaios stater, because of the action packed reverse. Have a great 2024!
  3. Great interview again, thanks! That anecdote about the thesis is very funny. And that library, just WOW!
  4. Thats a cool coin @LONGINUS. And never heard of this festival before, thanks for posting. A flying horse: Two mules who literally got time off, as their cart is resting behind them:
  5. Fantastic coins! Yes, your no. 1 would be my no. 1 too, although your no 2 is a really nice issue of this type. The rendering of the reverse is absoltely fantastic. I surely don't see these in this quality for offer! Goog grab πŸ™‚ Anyway, have a great 2024!
  6. Jolly good times! (Had to say that) and lovely coins. Thanks for sharing the coins, and lazy presentation πŸ˜„ HAve a great 2024!
  7. Too bad the coins sold for far below what you were hoping for. I've sold a dozen something coins of somewhat lesser quality, via various venues. Overall, it's a loss, not because of the prices realized, but because of the fees, shipping, taxes and so on. I think it's not that easy to compensate for those costs, unless you happen to have a couple of eid-mar denarii in your stock for over three decades... C'est la vie. The other way around is also at play though, where retailers add dozens percentages to the coins added to their stock via auctions, private sellings, and so on. Sometimes even more than 100%. It only takes one buyer who did not do his research. The other way around is that sometimes buyers get lucky and score coins cheaply. Personally, I'll never use Leu as a selling venue. It does not match my coins. I mean, I have mediocre coins, sometimes slightly better than that. But they will be completely lost between the dozes of similar coins, or even the exact same types. Also, from a EU to a non-EU country (i.e.; Swiss is not part of the Union, but part of the continent) seems like a hassle dealing with a different currency, taxes, banking costs and so on. So I always use sellers based in the EU. It also helps to know the venue, having bought coins there and having a feeling with their behaviour, the coins they generally offer, the prices realized. So that the coins I sell via that venue stand out, get good descriptions, and I can make a good estimation of my loss, so to minimize it. This is a good point. I've already made a document for my wife and kids, with a venue and instructions. I've deliberately chosen a venue that is good, helpful, but also not on the other side of the planet but within normal travelling distance. No hassle with shipping, taxes, currencies, and so on. It's not about maximizing a profit for them, I mean, my coins are the worst investment ever, but to make it easy for them if they chose to sell the collection.
  8. This photo shows it better, and makes it worse indeed! Hopefully the seller replies to your request.
  9. Thanks @Curtisimo! Wanting to get the popular 12C's in silver, a denarius of Caligula is a must, and I'm still very happy to have scored this one. Again coingratulations on yours.
  10. Its a nice coin with a great portrait, I must say the rim issue doesnt look that horrible in the photo. I can see why you did not see the gravity of it. And in hand issues can be not that bad in comparison to a photo, or the other way around and even be worse. Too bad... Also on the reverse, there appears to be a small corrosion spot. Below the C, at the edge. Is it active? You might put that forward to the auctioneer too. But hey, on the positive side, you got the coin already! Mine are still stuck in German postal purgatory....
  11. Fantastic additions! That Ptolemy III is really, really impressive, the obverse is fantastic! About that issue of Tigranes II the Great; the reverse shows the same theme as the tetradrachm struck under Augustus, some 80 or 60 years later (see e.g.: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6179322). Interesting, do you know if Augustus intentionally copied the design?
  12. Nice addition. Your question makes me wonder. If the silver issue has the o mark below the neck, why does the bronze issue lacks this mintmark? Note; im not an expert in any way....!
  13. Here's something completey different from what I tend to collect. Nevertheless, very interesting coins and I like to read about them. Thanks for sharing your list. I voted for the third coin, the Kamnaskires-Orodes tetradrachm. The portrait is kind of freaky, and the pinecone earrings suit it perfectly πŸ˜„
  14. Great coin, the portraits are both very clear. Thanks for showing it. And very informative write up too. Denarii of Caligula and Claudius are both very rare. You cited the three theories that are generally used to explain the rarity of the denarii of both emperors. But I think all three theories insufficiently explain the situation. Both Caligula and Claudius had good reasons to show the populace their heritage to legitimate their rule, and strike coins displaying this. So, I believe other unknown circumstances were playing at the time, and likely they will remain forever unknown to us. Anyway, here's my budget non-dynastic Caligula denarius. I think it's the cheapest denarius of Caligula a collector could acquire 😁
  15. Fantastic write up, very interesting, even though i dont have coins showing the children. Thanks for sharing!
  16. Had to read this a couple of times... to fully grasp the amount of coins you've added to your collection in one year That's almost 6 coins a week. The mailman must be a good acquaintance by now, lol! Even though your collecting preferences are completely different than mine, and I don't know much about your top 10, it is interesting to look at them and read about them. I was drawn to your Lykkeios Tetradrachm and ended up voting for this one. The reverse is quite neat, a bit crude, but nevertheless appealing. Overall a great coin.
  17. I know you collect coins with the find provenances, and it remains very interesting to read where every individual coin came from. Lovely collecting theme (if I can call it that πŸ˜„) My favorites are the second coin with the lovely display of the dog on the reverse, your Sabina denarius, and of course the gold stater with the wolf on the reverse. I really like the design of that one! Have a great 2024.
  18. Although this is miles from my collecting preference, I enjoy seeing and reading about the coins. It's like an episode of time team on paper πŸ™‚ I don't know enough to chose a favorite, in terms of rarity e.g. So I chose a favorite merely based on what appeals to me most. And that it your first coin, the sceatta. The obverse is interesting, but I also really like the rendering of the reverse, as most sceattas I've seen so far are rather abstract/vague when it comes to their designs. Have a great 2024!
  19. Great additions @LONGINUS. And lovely digital tray as usual! I really like that big Augustus ae from Antioch. Have a fantastic 2024!
  20. Fantastic coins! I was really doubting between your no. 1 and no. 3. But ended up voting for your no. 1. Can't resist a man-faced bull πŸ™‚ Have a great 2024!
  21. Nice idea for a thread, and great coins! And I completely understand the relationship between puny and being father of three πŸ˜‰ Anyway, when it comes to outfits, these come to mind. 1. A nice harnas to keep you warm during the winter: 2. A nice warm hat also helps: 3. Some extra clothing for the imaginative figure...
  22. Great 2023 additions, Coingratulations! I really like the photos of the coins, and the digital display. Nicely done! Also the little write ups per coin are very interesting. Ill go through them more carefully. I decided to pick 3 favorites, but could have been more. But in the end I went for the Severus bridge reverse (i just love coins with structures/buildings on the reverse!), the Lysimachos tetradrachm and the Caesar portrait. Although i had difficulty with the last, because the Severus denarius with Neptune reverse is a stunner! Have a great 2024! Edit: and the fact that the Severus bridge issue is very worn did not prevent me voting for it. Such a great coin and rarity!
  23. Fantastic additions Ryro! The issues featuring Hercules/Herakles are especially cool. Difficult to pick favorites. But in the end, I went for Caracalla from Tarsus, the Arsinoite Nome, and a runner up: baby Herakles. Immean, why is that not in the top10?! Baby Herakles is really cool, and the scylla on the helmet makes it even better! πŸ™‚
  24. Wow, these are some fantastic greek silver coins. Spectacular! And good provenance hunting too, well done. Tradition compels me to pick a favorite (or two, or three), and if you were to put a gun to to my head, I think I'd scream no. 1 and 3 πŸ˜„
  25. Thats a really cool reverse scene on your coin.
