  1. Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope everyone has a joyous day full of feasting, drinking, and good times! I am grateful to everyone here for making this forum such a welcoming and heartwarming place ☺️
  2. Wow! I know auction prices are through the roof right now so getting coins can be difficult, but this seems a bit extreme! 😱 Hopefully they aren’t melted down 🥺
  3. As an atheist, I actually find myself using BC/AD over BCE and CE. I personally dislike the verbiage of BCE and CE; why is the birth of Christ considered the heralding in of the Common Era? If the Common Era refers to Christian dominance in the Western World, it should probably be anchored to when Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of the Empire. Christ didn’t really become a “thing” until well after his birth so calling his birth the Common Era seems intellectually dishonest. So, BC and AD (again just my POV) make the most sense to use for why our calendar is what it is. I actually get around this entirely in my coinage (since they’re all Roman Imperial) by including the regnal years of the emperor/empress, and common sense indicates whether the dates are BC or AD based off the direction of the dates:
  4. Happy Veterans Day! Thank you @Al Kowsky and all the other Vets here on the forum for your service. You’re the reason we’re all able to live safe & prosperous lives 🙂
  5. I recall in the History of Rome podcast Mike saying the pantheon was rebuilt under the emperor Trajan, to the exact same specifications as when Agrippa built it. Crazy what slips through even in scripted podcasts, can’t imagine how difficult it is to do them live!
  6. He didn’t even get a guess out, just totally blanked on anything!
  7. Anyone watch the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions episode tonight? One of the Daily Doubles in round 2 referenced the EID MAR denarius,“in 2020 an unnamed bidder spent $4.2M for the so-called EID MAR coin minted by this assassin.” It was an $800 clue so the contestant bet $10K clearly thinking it would be easy, and then missed the question! 🤯 Couldn’t believe it!! Was shouting at my TV but unfortunately he didn’t hear me. Clearly he should have spent time on this forum first 😁
  8. A for Aurelian! A for Abundantia!
  9. Wonderful thread, D! Will share my lifetime issue of Faustina I, to commemorate all the lives saved by mammograms 🙂
  10. Here you go! https://kuenker.auex.de Register on that site and you'll be able to bid on the floor auction... or just cry seeing the prices go sky-high like I did 😂. You'll have to make a new registration there even if you have a Künker account already. It only works for the live bidding part of the floor auctions so if you pre bid on the Künker site, those pre-bids won't sync with this account.
  11. I know!! And it was Lot 666, I'm sure CNG got a nice laugh making that happen. I wanted it crazy bad, but couldn't justify going for $600+ excluding buyers fee ☹️
  12. Brutal, brutal! So many beautiful Hadrians and those prices were intense. Think I was underbidder on like 6 of them. Got some Sevs to add to my collection... Angry looking Julia... Can't wait to free this Severus Alexander from its tomb! Anyone get anything from today?
  13. Reading articles about impending recession, and then seeing these prices.... I am floored. If I ever sell my collection, Künker will be my consignor of choice 🤑
  14. Just got registered in the nick of time! Didn't realize you had to create two separate accounts, one for pre-bidding and one for live auction. The very nice lady I was on the phone with informed me that I could run the risk of live auction bidding against my pre-bids if I wasn't careful 😂 Very glad I called in when my (unbeknownst to me) pre-bid-only account kept erroring out when I tried logging in to the live bid 😅
  15. Today was rough. Wanted 4 provincials, only got one. Missed bidding on one as the predecessor I was bidding on went over. Way overpaid on my win but was annoyed how things were trending and didn’t want to leave empty handed! The Win: The Losses… hopefully someone here got them! Hopefully fair better tomorrow in the imperials!
  16. Dear Lord, I’ve never seen so much gold before in one auction with no silver to break it up! Think we know who curated this auction..
  17. Wonderful, wonderful coins and a cool animation! 😃 That's awesome to see a full collection! Do we have any idea why Probus did this fun little scavenger hunt on his coins?
  18. I was not! My wallet will not thank you for informing me of this, but my obsessive personality will, ha! Coins of Probus have quickly entered my top tier favorites, so I suppose I will start the journey of trying to collect all 6, with matching obverse 😅
  19. Oh that's cool! Your coin is famous! 😄 And thanks, I will keep my description without cuirassed.
  20. Hi all - looking for some very specific ID help on this Probus: Current attribution is RIC 490, which I believe is accurate. But from there, Wildwinds shows 2 examples, one with Probus described as cuirassed, the other, lacking that description but with the reverse having a star in the right field. When I first made the format and description on my image, above, I hadn't noticed this peculiar difference. Here is the image from Wildwinds that is described as "Radiate, mantled, and cuirassed bust left..." with the reverse "Q to left" Here is the one where Probus is not described as cuirassed, simply "radiate bust left, wearing imperial mantle..." but with a star on the reverse: I'm inclined to think mine is the first example, with the emperor cuirassed, but frankly I can't make heads or tails where the difference is on the obverse between the two examples shown on WW. Additionally, the 'Q' on the reverse on mine syncs up with the second example rather than the first. Mine is clearly lacking a star on the reverse unless it has somehow rubbed off. I suppose a third option is that both versions should say he is cuirassed, and perhaps just an oversight on WW. What do you think?
  21. Al, this is a phenomenal example! 🤩 I have had one of these on my want list for some time now, and seeing yours has made me even more impatient to acquire one soon! 🙇‍♂️
  22. Love me some Trajan! Such excellent examples here 😍 Here's some of mine...
