  1. Wonder if they edited the photo. The chocolate coin seems to not be perfectly round, looking at the space on the right between his fingers. Seems jagged! Weird.
  2. What a great catch RC! I have always been intrigued why it seems so difficult to find reliable places that sell non-tampered sestertii and call out tooled ones. I have a number of houses where I’ll buy from them for denarii, but I can’t bring myself to trust them correctly identifying whether a sestertii has been tooled. If it looks too good to be true, and the price is on the lower end, generally end up steering clear. Maybe some houses just don’t think it’s an important thing to call out? Or perhaps it’s more difficult to identify and not every house thinks it’s worth the investment? Someone smarter than me I’m sure has the answer 😆
  3. I’ll look into this, definitely wasn’t a deliberate decision and I agree with the sentiment around preferring without.
  4. Thank you @expat!! Your kind words and Supporter status are very much appreciated! 😃 Can’t wait to see you hit your 1,000th post! 🥳
  5. I heard from a very reputable source that the Baron de Chambrier is devastated his EID MAR coin no longer holds the title as most expensive ancient coin sold! 😆
  6. This is interesting... a quick google search says "Coal mined in the Midwest states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio have the highest sulfur content of any region of the country". I happen to reside in one of those states. Maybe that is it! I do open the window in my office on a regular basis. Funny to think that pollution could be making my coins look prettier and more valuable, for those of us who prefer a toned coin at least 😄
  7. Thanks!! Here’s how they’re displayed: Pretty simple but it gets the job done. They’re usually kept on my desk and I’ll handle them regularly (had to move them for the moment as I'm redesigning my office layout). They do get a near direct hit from the sun during the afternoon hours based off how my office is oriented. For photography I use my iPhone 14 Pro. I’ll use the RAW setting, 1x zoom, and shine some light on the coins (although admittedly for the “now” photos here I did just a quick shoot vs the usual more involved process I do). Interesting! I'm not exactly sure the wood species of the stand the Abafil tray is on, it's from Alberto Zecchi. I went to his site to check for more info. but looks like he's on vacation and closed down his site for the time being! I'm interested to see what happens to another batch of my coins, I got this for Xmas from Alberto as well and am storing some coins in here (the interior is red velvet). So far no noticeable change in toning, and since they're kept closed not much air gets in, but will be interesting to see:
  8. I’ve been noticing for a while now, a number of my coins have begun to tone at what I feel is a rapid pace. I’m a little bit concerned that these coins, many of which came as toneless silver, have turned into rainbows! I hope y’all can calm my nerves that this is totally normal and not to worry, and that toning doesn't actually take nearly as long as I thought it would (I was thinking it took coins decades to tone) because I'm a tad stressed about this at the moment😅 Before (Jul 2022): Now: Before (Jul 2022): Now: Before (Jul 2022): Now: This one isn’t as extreme but if you look closely you’ll see the signs are starting on it in his hair. Before (Jul 2022): Now: And saving the best for last, my most extreme: Auction House Photo (Sep 2020): Now: I keep all these coins on an Abafil tray. Blue velvet. They’re “exposed” only in that I don’t cover the tray with anything. House is usually kept around 69°. They do get direct sun light for a few hours a day based off their location in my office, although for all of these coins the obverse and reverse sides are toning at about an equal pace, despite the obverse side being the "visible" side probably 85% of the time. Would you be concerned?
  9. Happy Birthday Numis Forums!!! Thinking back on the last year I’m so amazed and grateful for how far we’ve come. We started out as a Discord chat where discussions with some of the original members @DonnaML @JeandAcre @Phil Davis @Roman Collector @Ryro @Severus Alexander @voulgaroktonou over whether to launch a new site began. For everyone getting their 1 year account anniversary notifications thru May 31, you’ll remember when we were just a 30 day free trial site, launched on May 22, with a URL consisting of random letters and numbers. We weren’t anywhere on the web (publicly), and could only grow by existing members sending the link to people who wanted to join. 100% word of mouth!! The first 10 days, all I could think about from dawn till dusk (and honestly even in my sleep) was our little site. Every new member, every post, every like, filled me with joy and hope that our site could be a real forum. We had so much success in just those 10 days that we pulled the trigger on becoming a “real” website and became Numis Forums on June 1! 🥳🥳🥳 If y’all would indulge me for a moment… For those of you versed in US history, you’ll know that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 2, and publicly announced on July 4. Founding Father John Adams was of the belief that July 2 would be celebrated as our nations birthday, but unfortunately for him we went with the 4th! Here at Numis Forums though, I think John Adams would be very happy to see May 22 celebrated as the sites birthday. While we publicly became Numis Forums on June 1, I like to now think of May 22 as our “declaration” birthday. Having these two birthdays also means a week+ long of celebrations, which works out pretty nicely if you ask me 🙂 I can never say enough how grateful and thankful I am to everyone here. You all have built this forum into something great, and I’m honored to be a part of it! Looking forward to all the years to come 😃 Res/Luke
  10. Fellow Numisheads, After a grueling last 4 days of work, it was an incalculable joy to log in today and see we have officially hit 500 members!!! We've been getting closer and closer these last few days as I'm sure many of you noticed, and I was cautiously optimistic (but to be honest also a little nervous) that we'd get there before our 1 Year Anniversary as a forum (June 1) and lo and behold, we did!!! And not only that, but with 13 days to spare!! If you had asked me this time last year if I had ever thought that our little forum would become, in such a short amount of time, the most active forum site for ancient coins on the web, I'd have said you must be dreaming! But we did it! Thank you all so much for making this forum what it is. It is an absolute joy to log on here every day and see how active it is, how friendly everyone is, and of course, how beautiful all the coins are. And thank you as well to all our supporters, patrons, and benefactors. It's because of y'all that I can keep the lights on here, and ensure that this forum will never be covered in terrible advertisements and pop ups 😁 Looking forward to celebrating the 1 Year milestone here soon!! 🤩 In honor of this milestone, feel free to post any coin that makes you happy!!! -Res
  11. Omg that is so much better! Gonna remember that for next year 😁
  12. This is hilarious 😁 Piggybacking off this… Obv: IMP OPTIMUS SHEEV PALPATINE Idealized youthful portrait of The Emperor, facing right, commemorating his victory over the Jedi rebellion. Rev: CAES DARTH VADER Jedi Temple in flames, with statue of Darth Vader surmounting, holding light saber, right, and hologram communicator, left. Happy belated bday @dougsmit! 🥳
  13. Happy [belated] Birthday Rome! Roma Invicta
  14. I really hope this ends up purchased or at least “permanently loaned” to a museum. Such beauty! Should be seen by all.
  15. Wow 😍 do you accept out of auction offers? 😉 I have a feeling once again I’ll lose out on coins as the website tells me I’ve won only to then tell me I lose. But, we shall see!
  16. I get the ‘why’ Greece, but really feel like this coin should be in Rome, if it was going to be repatriated somewhere. Given the historical significance.
  17. Here’s a photo I took on my honeymoon last spring, think I got the statue you’re referring to!
  18. Tried my hand today at a few coins on Roma. I am continuously reminded whenever I try and win a coin there, why I hate bidding on their platform. 3 coins today I had the winning bid, it hammered, then it flipped to a 1 increment higher bid and I lost. Even though I had a cushion between my winning bid and my max. I know it has something to do with the site refreshing but I am sooooo over it. /rant
  19. Alas I have no coins of Caesar, so I have joyously been watching this thread and living vicariously through all the other posters 😁But! It is time for the annual watching of the final episode of HBOs Rome season 1 so that’s something to celebrate. Just spectacular TV, the assassination of Caesar is so real. RIP :[

  21. Apparently, for only like 40 bucks, we can all become Barons or Baronesses of Sealand and thus update our own coin provenances accordingly 🤣 https://sealandgov.org/product/become-a-baron-or-baroness/
  22. I do find this paragraph about the EID MAR listing quite ironic now considering what appears has occurred (emphasis mine): ”It had once been in the collection of 18th-century Baron Dominique de Chambrier of Switzerland and was so coveted that England’s King George III was duped into purchasing a fake, the forgery now on display at the British Museum” Perhaps knowing this coin was part of a dupe of King George III will make American jurors more sympathetic? 🤪
  23. Hi Everyone / I just want to preemptively chime in here as this subject is incredibly delicate. While discussion's on the coins themselves is germane to this forum, let’s please minimize any discussion around the individual(s) involved. As we say, innocent until proven guilty, and I don’t want the forum to become a place to speculate on any individuals guilt or otherwise, as it could open up a Pandora’s box of legal stuff that benefits no one. Thanks, Res
  24. Hey all - working with Curtis to get his account re-activated. He got a new pc and we’ve been running into trouble getting him access to his account with his new setup.
