Rome, Struck 14 September-31 December AD 91. Laureate head right / Minerva standing right on prow, holding spear and shield. RIC II 727; RSC 267. A magnificent portrait struck on a large flan and with an amazing grey toning. Candidate for finest known. Good Extremly fine. Description from Superior Galleries Auctions. @David Atherton says: "This common denarius was struck between 14 September and 31 December 91. All four standard Minerva types were minted for this issue with no unusual deviations" --- My last ancient coin today. Will see what happens in real - if the coin arrived here. Don’t trust a description … and thanks to @David Atherton - this Domitianus is a RIC 764. https://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.2_1(2).dom.764
Prieure de Sion Posted October 18, 2022 · Member Share Posted October 18, 2022 Its a little bit off topic - but I will give a very positive feedback about a auction house. I get this Domitianus - was declared from the auction house as RIC 727 - but as you see the last postings - it was RIC 764. But thats nothing change - its a lovely fantastic coin. But the false RIC. But - mistakes happens - nobody's free - I am not angry - that happens. I make sometime mistakes too. So I talk with that with the auctions house "Superior Galleries" https://www.biddr.com/auctions/superior-galleries/contact And they offer me cancel the bid - or I get a discount of 150 USD. I think thats a great offer - and I take the last option. So I will give this very positive feedback about this company.
Edessa Posted October 18, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted October 18, 2022 A recent tale of dealing with Goldberg. Relatively large shipment was delayed because someone in their organization was out for a few days, and I had not gotten an invoice. This was only two weeks after the auction, but it was a large order, and I was impatient. Got an immediate email replay from Freeman Fisher with Goldberg. He personally found the coins, packaged them up and had them shipped the next day, while refunding the shipping cost. On the other hand, a similar sized order from Bertolami dating back from March is still lost in the mail (Bertolami) or returned to Sender (DHL), depending on who you want to believe. I have mentally written off these coins and books since I doubt that I will ever receive them and no one on the other end seems to much care.

red_spork Posted October 29, 2022 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2022 (edited) A couple new additions from Second Punic War Sicily not worthy of individual forum posts. First, a rare uncia variety in the style of the wheat-ear issue(Crawford 42/4) without the wheat-ear mintmark on the reverse. This specific type without the mintmark is not listed in Crawford: Roman Republic Æ Uncia(6.04g, 21mm, 6h). Anonymous, style of corn-ear(wheat-ear) series. 214-212 B.C. Sicilian mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, • / Prow of galley right; ROMA above; below, •. Roberto Russo, Essays Hersh, pl. 18, 34; McCabe Group B1; Crawford -(but cf. 42/4 for similar style with corn-ear); Sydenham - Ex Roma Numismatics E-Sale 101, 13 October 2022, lot 883, "From a private European collection". And a scarcer anonymous denarius, Crawford 75/1c, the unsigned sibling of the C AL issue. This is an upgrade for me. My previous example had some flatness on the reverse and just wasn't a great coin. This is much better and the cost was a very modest uplift after selling my prior example: Roman Republic AR Denarius(19mm, 4.47 g, 1h), anonymous(related to C AL series), 209-208 B.C., Sicilian mint. Helmeted head of Roma right with loop beneath visor; behind, X / The Dioscuri galloping right; below, ROMA in linear frame.
