  1. Here are some influential roman women in my collection. AE Sestertius of Agrippina Sr. AR Denarius of Diva Faustina Sr. rev temple of Diva Faustina, ex @kapphnwn
  2. I have two coins of Severus Alexander, one commemorating his third consulship and the other depicting Spes. A few posters seem to have the latter. Unfortunately, I don't have a coin of Mamaea or Orbiana.
  3. As @Severus Alexander suggested, I don't think you quite understood my comment. I said formal or informal background. Contrary to what you have surmised, I think that coins are fantastic educational tools.
  4. Here it goes..... 1. I absolutely despise low-grade coins. I don't care if a coin is extremely rare; I'm not interested if I have to imagine what it was intended to look like. For me, a high-grade common coin is always superior to a low-grade rarity. That is not to say that I don't appreciate a high-grade rarity if my budget allows it! Perhaps this is not so controversial as others have already echoed this sentiment. 2. I don't understand the appeal of small provincial bronzes. In addition to often being aesthetically crude, they just seem dinky to me. 3. I would prefer that people who lack a background in ancient history, whether it's formal (education) or informal (personal interest), stay away from ancients. 4. Not fond of slabs....but this is probably the least controversial opinion among ancients' collectors.
  5. Fantastic group @Qcumbor !!!! The elephant and Venus/Aeneas denarii of JC and the M. and L. Antonius denarius are excellent!
  6. Well....I just won this coin today as a part of CNG's e-sale. I liked this coin when I examined it at the NYINC lot viewing, which is why I already have my own photograph of it. I've been after the type for a while and CNG had another nice example in their coin shop, but it had verdigris that I found too distracting. Since this coin is NYINC adjacent, I figured I would share it in this thread. Trajan (AD 98-117) AR Denarius - rv. Danube Also, here are some of the pics I took at the Cloisters while I was in NYC.
  7. Here are my larger folles of Diocletian, Galerius and Constantius I, respectively...unfortunately, I don't have a follis of Maximian
  8. Hi everyone, Thought I'd share my purchases from this year's NYINC. I will admit that I was disappointed to have only acquired 3 coins as I had acquired 11 at last year's show. I simply didn't find many things I was looking for. For one, certain dealers I purchased from previously had smaller inventories. There were many pieces that I was interested in, but decided not to purchase for one reason or another (i.e. not high-grade enough, surface issues, no pedigree, price...etc.). Nevertheless, I was glad to be able to attend the show on the early-bird day. I also had the pleasure of meeting @Ed Snible in line as I was waiting to enter the show. Unfortunately, I didn't see anyone else from numisforums. During my trip to NYC, I also visited the cloisters, a museum operated by the MET that focuses on medieval art. The museum was absolutely stunning, with panoramic views of the Hudson and equally gorgeous interiors which had many building elements such as doorways, stained-glass windows and even ceilings from the 11th-13th centuries. This museum was very quiet compared to the MET's main building, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting NYC (even if medieval art is not you're thing)! I will post my photos from the cloisters later in this thread. For now, here are the coins I acquired. Octavian denarius rv. colum - ex Lanz 76 (31 May 1996), lot 360, acquired from Baldwins Tiberius denarius - ex CNG Triton VIII (10 January 2005), lot 1091, acquired from CNG. This pedigree was found by @kapphnwn. Trajan denarius rv. Divus Trajan Pater - acquired from Martina Dieterle Also, feel free to share any of your NYINC purchases!
  9. In ancient greek text, it is καρρηνων. I believe the pronunciation would be CARR - EHH - NOWN.
  10. Yes, you definitely met me along with @kapphnwn..... I just added my physical description for those who don't know what I look like!
  11. I will be attending the show on Thursday as well as the live bidding sessions for Triton, both the evening session on the 10th and the morning session on the 11th. Is anyone else attending the auctions? Hope to meet some fellow Numisformers (?)! Feel free to say hi....I'm probably going to be the youngest person bidding/buying and I usually wear a black messenger bag so I shouldn't be too hard to identify.
  12. I’m late to comment, but wanted to say that your acquisitions are spectacular as usual. Of course, I’m partial to the aurei. My favourites would be the Claudius and Maximian, but all are wonderful! Looking forward to NYINC as well!
  13. Well done, Donna. All are great additions, but my personal favourites are the L. Memmius and M. Aurelius Cota!
  14. My favourite is the Aegypto Capta, the Faustina has great style! Well done!
  15. Thanks for all your likes, heart eyes and comments everyone. I enjoyed sharing my additions and viewing all of yours! Wishing you all a safe and prosperous 2023!
  16. Hi Everyone, Here's my top 20 of 2022. I will keep this intro short! Overall, I felt that this year was a success in terms of collecting. While I didn't acquire any new aurei or first-century sestertii, I did add a few key pieces to my collection and I discovered a number of hidden provenances. 17. All fantastic additions, Terence! My favourites have to be the Titus and Trajan sestertii.

  19. Wow...you had a terrific year of collecting! My favourites are the Tyrian shekel, Mithradates VI, Ptolemy I, Magnesia ad Meandrum, Kamarina ae, Lucania nomos, Kassander, and Eukratides, but I couldn't possibly narrow it further......
  20. Entertaining sure....but definitely NOT historically accurate
  21. I agree that the dealer was being rude. I've had somewhat similar experiences with dealers at shows. At the ANA there was a modern dealer that had a few good slabbed ancients. I contacted this dealer prior to the show to make sure that they would have their roman imperial inventory. I indicated that I would be attending on Friday in my email, and the dealer assured me that that wasn't a problem. When I asked to see the Roman inventory, the dealer looked at me as if I was bothering him, groaned and said that he had already put them in a safe which was just behind him. I referred to his email in which he assured me that I could see these pieces. He then pointed to three aurei which he kept on display and said "well just look at these I'm not taking the other coins out". There were a few other modern dealers that had decent slabbed ancients, but all were unwilling to negotiate. Most of them didn't seem to know what they actually had. This is one of the reasons I prefer to give my business to actual ancients dealers such as CNG, NAC, Gorny...etc. This is also why I much prefer the NYINC show. I do wish that modern dealers/collectors with no real understanding of ancients would stay in their lane, but the proliferation of slabbed ancients makes this an unlikely reality.
  22. Unfortunately, I don't have a sestertius of Faustina II or any coin of her, but I recently picked up this sestertius of Faustina I from CNG. Ex Niclovitz Collection (L. Hamburger [76], 19 October 1925), lot 1000.
  23. When I bought this, it was described as an as....some believe it actually is a reduced sestertius. AE As of Severina Next: How about some big 3rd-century bronzes? Let's see a double sestertius
