  7. Over the past three years, I developed a close friendship with Terence. What started as direct messages on the old site evolved into regular phone calls. Not only have I gained valuable insights from his extensive knowledge of numismatics and history through our many conversations, but I've also enjoyed his sense of humour and our discussions about life. I especially enjoyed getting to meet him in person at NYINC in 2022, where I attended my first live auction with him and we inspected coins together on the bourse floor. I am also grateful that I had the opportunity to see him a week ago, have a long, meaningful conversation with him, and say goodbye. Terence's learnedness, enthusiasm for life, and warmth have had a lasting impact on me and many others. I will cherish our friendship forever. Thank you, Terence
  8. Hi everyone, I'm a bit late, but here are my top 10 coins of 2023. This year, my list is notably shorter compared to previous years as I was less successful in acquiring coins. Nevertheless, I managed to find several coins that have eluded me for some time, and with the help of rnumis, I've also managed to uncover some of their hidden provenances. Unlike in previous years, my list is not arranged chronologically. Without further delay, here are the first five: 1. Nero (AD 54-68) A sestertius Nero has been one of my top collecting grails for years. I was particularly disappointed when the example I liked in the Triton auction hammered for well above my price level. However, I was very happy to pick up this example from a Heritage auction a few months later. My example also boasts a much better pedigree, having once been in the Vierordt collection (joining my Volusian sestertius and Claudius/Agrippina denarius). Through rnumis, I also found an earlier Cahn pedigree (see below). AE Sestertius (34mm, 23.57 g). Rome mint. AD 64. NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P, laureate head of Nero left / View of triumphal arch, showing front and left hand side; above, the Emperor in a quadriga escorted by Victory; arch is heavily ornamented and decorated with statues of Pax, Mars and two soldiers; RIC I 150. Ex George Joseph Bauer (1870-1961) Collection; M. L. Vierordt of Bloemendaal Collection; Alfred Oertel Collection; Heritage Auctions CSNS World Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction (4 May 2023), lot 31177; Glendining (23 January 1963), lot 1184; J. Schulman 145 (17 June 1924), lot 683; J. Schulman 139 (5 March 1923), lot 889; Adolph E. Cahn 32 (17 March 1913), lot 1133. Photo Credit Heritage/NGC Photo Credit Adolf Cahn via Rnumis 2. Ptolemy II (285-246 BC) A portrait coin of Ptolemy I has been on my list for several years. I was drawn to this particular example when I initially spotted it on the dealer's website; although it is technically a posthumous issue, I thought its style was captivating. However, I held off on purchasing until I found a pedigree, which I found a few weeks later (see below). AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 14.17 g). Sidon mint. 249-248 BC. Diademed Head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied around neck, dotted border / ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt, dotted border, in left field ΣΙ above and ΔΙ below, in right field Λ𝖨. Lorber 539. Svoronos 751. Ex Ed Waddell. Inventory No. 56915; Pegasi Numismatics (1995); Italo Vecchi, Sale 5 (5 March 1997), lot 324. Photo Credit Italo Vecchi via Rnumis 3. Valens (AD 364-378) I really like late Roman silver, especially miliarenses. When I saw this coin at NYINC, I thought it was too overpriced, so I was very happy to score this later in the year at auction. AR Light Miliarense (23 mm, 4.40 g), Treveri mint, AD 367-375. D N VALENS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS EXERCITVS, emperor standing front, head to left, holding labarum in his right hand and placing his left on shield set on ground. Mintmark TRPS. RIC 26b. Ex Leu Numismatik Auction 14 (14 October 2023), lot 251; Fritz Rudolf Künker Auction 243 (21 November 2013), lot 5281. 4. Nero & Drusus Caesars. d. AD 31 and AD 33, respectively. As a Julio-Claudian fanatic, I was thrilled to acquire this coin of Caligula's ill-fated brothers. AE Dupondius (29mm, 15.59 g). Rome mint. AD 40-41, struck under Gaius (Caligula). NERO ET DRVSVS CAESARES, Nero and Drusus on horseback galloping right / C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG P M TR P IIII PP around large SC. RIC I 49. Ex Ernst Ploil Collection; Classical Numismatic Group Feature Auction 123 (24 May 2023), lot 592; Numismatica Ars Classica 125 (24 June 2021), lot 622; Numismatica Ars Classica 101 (24 October 2017), lot 107; Künker 83 (17 June 2003), lot 752. Photo Credit CNG 5. Valentinian I (AD 364-375) AR Siliqua (18mm, 2.23 g). Thessalonica mint. AD 364-367. DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / RESTITVTOR REIP, emperor standing front, looking right, holding labarum and Victory on globe. Mintmark TES. RIC IX 12a. Ex Stack's Bowers World Collectors Choice Online Auction (27 February 2023), lot 71154; Spink Auction 16006 (27 September 2016), lot 2903; East Harptree Hoard (1887). Stay tuned for part 2!
  9. All superb additions @Phil Davis! The Antony/Sol and Sex. Pompeius are my favourites!
  10. Great additions for 2023 @Qcumbor! My favourites are 1,2 & 4. The Trajan is striking!
  11. Here's the latest coin I received. I was going to wait to post it until my annual top 10 coins, but I figured why not give a preview! Ptolemy II. 285-246 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 14.17 g). Sidon mint. 249-248 BC. Diademed Head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied around neck, dotted border / ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt, dotted border, in left field ΣΙ above and ΔΙ below, in right field Λ𝖨. Lorber 539. Svoronos 751. Many thanks to @rNumis for posting the Vecchi catalogues where I found this coin. Ex Ed Waddell. Inventory No. 56915. Ex Pegasi Numismatics (1995). Ex Italo Vecchi, Sale 5 (5 March 1997), lot 324.
  12. I haven't been around in a while or acquired a new coin for some time, so here's a welcome addition. I saw this coin back in January at the NYINC as a part of Leu's FPL and liked it, but thought the price was too high. I ended up winning it in their latest feature auction. AR Miliarense of Valens from the Trier mint
  13. Here's my only Tacitus, an antoninianus from Rome.
  14. Here's my example of the same type, AE Sestertius of Agrippina the Elder rv. SC, struck under Claudius.
  15. I'm a little behind, but still wanted to post my Severus Alexander since I have re-photographed it. I have been slowly re-photographing my coins under natural light and have been happy with the results. The reverse depicts the emperor driving a triumphal quadriga, and the issue was struck to commemorate the assumption of his third consulship. Also here's my sestertius of Maximus, rv. sacrificial implements.
  16. This coin is plated in the online version of RPC, though its volume II. Denarius of Vespasian, RPC II 1921.
  17. My one coin of Julia Domna: a sestertius with the reverse depicting the goddess Felicitas, a personification of fertility and good fortune.
  18. At the moment, my collection is rather small so there are only a few rulers whose coins could form a group (more than 2 coins). Here are my coins of Augustus in one photo.
  19. If you ask them to put FedEx shipping on your profile, they will do so. My last two invoices were well under 2,000 CHF. I won't purchase from any auction or coin vendor if they don't guarantee FedEx shipping prior to making the purchase. This request in on my profile at CNG, Kuenker, NAC etc.
  20. First and foremost, I collect Roman coins because of my long-standing love of Roman history. These coins represent a tangible connection to Rome's past. In my opinion, no other medium better illustrates the trajectory of Rome's cultural, political, economic, artistic and religious history. This is reflected in the generalist nature of my collection. I do not focus on specific denominations, metals, series, dynasties...etc because I want my collection to showcase Rome's broader history. I do, however, have preferred categories of coins (i.e. the Julio-Claudians, sestertii, late Roman silver...etc.). Here's my latest coin: an as of Germanicus struck posthumously by his son Caius (Caligula).
  21. I have only one siliqua (coin for that matter) of Valentinian I which is pictured below. It is from the Harptree hoard which was discovered in 1887 near Bath, England. The coin, however, is from the Thessalonica mint.
  22. This is probably my coin of Augustus with the most interesting reverse. It depicts the Curia Julia, the Roman senate house, which was built by Julius Caesar. Caesar's Curia replaced the former Curia Cornelia which was restored by Faustus Cornelius Sulla. The curia's completion by Octavian was commemorated in his Res Gestae and also on this coin.
  23. Nice wins. I won coins of Germanicus and Probus....I've included CNG's photograph of the former, as that is what sold me on the coin. You're right that Kunker's photos aren't the greatest.....most of the coins I've purchased from Kunker had prior auction photos for me to refer to. If someone has a copy of the Jean Elsen Sale 58 (1999), could you please PM me a photo or scan of lot 1196 including the listing? I would be eternally grateful!
  24. Congrats on your wins everyone! I was the underbidder on all 3 of my targets, including @Julius Germanicus’ Macrinus. I bid in the last 5 seconds for all three lots and was sniped at the 1 second mark. Oh well…there’ll be other auctions I suppose. I’ve never had particularly good luck with Leu so I shouldn’t be too surprised. 😞
  25. I have only one coin of Constantius II, my AR Miliarense from the Thessalonica mint
