Over the past three years, I developed a close friendship with Terence. What started as direct messages on the old site evolved into regular phone calls. Not only have I gained valuable insights from his extensive knowledge of numismatics and history through our many conversations, but I've also enjoyed his sense of humour and our discussions about life. I especially enjoyed getting to meet him in person at NYINC in 2022, where I attended my first live auction with him and we inspected coins together on the bourse floor. I am also grateful that I had the opportunity to see him a week ago, have a long, meaningful conversation with him, and say goodbye. Hi everyone, I'm a bit late, but here are my top 10 coins of 2023. This year, my list is notably shorter compared to previous years as I was less successful in acquiring coins. Nevertheless, I managed to find several coins that have eluded me for some time, and with the help of rnumis, I've also managed to uncover some of their hidden provenances. Unlike in previous years, my list is not arranged chronologically. Without further delay, here are the first five: 1. Nero (AD 54-68) A sestertius Nero has been one of my top collecting grails for years. I was particularly disappointed when the example I liked in the Triton auction hammered for well above my price level. However, I was very happy to pick up this example from a Heritage auction a few months later. My example also boasts a much better pedigree, having once been in the Vierordt collection (joining my Volusian sestertius and Claudius/Agrippina denarius). Through rnumis, I also found an earlier Cahn pedigree (see below). AE Sestertius (34mm, 23.57 g). Rome mint. AD 64. I haven't been around in a while or acquired a new coin for some time, so here's a welcome addition. I saw this coin back in January at the NYINC as a part of Leu's FPL and liked it, but thought the price was too high. I ended up winning it in their latest feature auction. I'm a little behind, but still wanted to post my Severus Alexander since I have re-photographed it. I have been slowly re-photographing my coins under natural light and have been happy with the results. The reverse depicts the emperor driving a triumphal quadriga, and the issue was struck to commemorate the assumption of his third consulship. Also here's my sestertius of Maximus, rv. sacrificial implements.

This coin is plated in the online version of RPC, though its volume II. Denarius of Vespasian, RPC II 1921.

My one coin of Julia Domna: a sestertius with the reverse depicting the goddess Felicitas, a personification of fertility and good fortune.

At the moment, my collection is rather small so there are only a few rulers whose coins could form a group (more than 2 coins). Here are my coins of Augustus in one photo.

First and foremost, I collect Roman coins because of my long-standing love of Roman history. These coins represent a tangible connection to Rome's past. In my opinion, no other medium better illustrates the trajectory of Rome's cultural, political, economic, artistic and religious history. This is reflected in the generalist nature of my collection. I do not focus on specific denominations, metals, series, dynasties...etc because I want my collection to showcase Rome's broader history. I do, however, have preferred categories of coins (i.e. the Julio-Claudians, sestertii, late Roman silver...etc.). Here's my latest coin: an as of Germanicus struck posthumously by his son Caius (Caligula).

I have only one siliqua (coin for that matter) of Valentinian I which is pictured below. It is from the Harptree hoard which was discovered in 1887 near Bath, England. The coin, however, is from the Thessalonica mint.

This is probably my coin of Augustus with the most interesting reverse. It depicts the Curia Julia, the Roman senate house, which was built by Julius Caesar. Caesar's Curia replaced the former Curia Cornelia which was restored by Faustus Cornelius Sulla. The curia's completion by Octavian was commemorated in his Res Gestae and also on this coin.

Nice wins. I won coins of Germanicus and Probus....I've included CNG's photograph of the former, as that is what sold me on the coin. You're right that Kunker's photos aren't the greatest.....most of the coins I've purchased from Kunker had prior auction photos for me to refer to. If someone has a copy of the Jean Elsen Sale 58 (1999), could you please PM me a photo or scan of lot 1196 including the listing? I would be eternally grateful!

Congrats on your wins everyone! I was the underbidder on all 3 of my targets, including @Julius Germanicus’ Macrinus. I bid in the last 5 seconds for all three lots and was sniped at the 1 second mark. Oh well…there’ll be other auctions I suppose. I’ve never had particularly good luck with Leu so I shouldn’t be too surprised. 😞
