Here are two recent denarii acquisitions of Octavian Caesar Augustus... Grade: Good very fine | Abbreviations Catalog: RIC I 252. Material: Silver Weight: 3.65 g Diameter: 20.56 mm Uncertain Italian mint, possibly Rome. Bare head right / Pax, draped, standing facing, head left, holding olive branch in right hand and cornucopia in left; CAESAR down left, DIVI • F up right. Cabinet tone. A well centered and well struck example. from DVIN , Switzerland Denarius of Augustus with Capricorn reverse from Harlan Berk this last one is a neat denarius because it displays his advertising for all to know that he is the heir and adopted son of Julius Caesar. It portrays Octavius (now C. Iulius Caesar Octavianus), with a beard denoting that he is in mourning for the assassination of his deified adoptive father.

I seem to identify with the stoic philosophy. One of my favorite lines in Latin was from Seneca, "Ducunt volentem fata, nolentem trahunt" or "the fates lead the willing and drag the resisting". There are no coins of Seneca , and his student Nero certainly was not very receptive to his teachings. But we do have a great leader who was - Marcus Aurelius. His Meditations are relevant to this day.

For a "fun" looking coin - well, the reverse of this sestertius of Caligula looks like it could be a lot of "fun". At least it was a lot of fun for Caligula with his sisters if you can believe Suetonius! next , a coin of Caligula (who probably would not be a whole lot of fun).

A new member with his new coin: Claudius Denarius
Octavius replied to John060167's topic in Roman Empire
Claudius is one of my favorite emperors - second only to Nero. I would highly recommend the old classics by Robert Graves, I Claudius , and Claudius The God, for anyone interested in Claudius or any of the Julio-Claudians for that matter. It is a great way to learn who's who and how they all are related to each other. Here is a selection of several of his denominations... aureus announcing his successor Nero Denarius with Praetorian camp Two of his sestertii Dupondius with Ceres reverse Three different types of his asses...- 29 replies

your coin looks good to me. Back of head, shape of nose, and lettering all look characteristically like Otho.
