What other ancient coin discussion forums do you read (and maybe post on) ?

I'm curious what other discussion boards people follow, and interested to learn about any I'm not aware of.

For me it's the following:

English:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php
https://www.lateromanbronzecoinforum.com/

I don't follow CoinTalk any more, since basically we're all here!

Foreign language:

https://www.nummus-bibleii.com/
https://www.forumfw.com/forum
https://www.lamoneta.it
https://www.numismatikforum.de/

The nummus-bibleii site in particular is highly recommended for LRB collectors - both for interesting coins posted, and for the database they maintain of RIC VII coin specimens - a great resource.

The coin cleaning sections of numismatikforum.de are notable for the wizard-level skills demonstrated by user Georg5. Well worth going through the archive and looking at his posts. Has anyone ever had him clean a coin for you?

I know that nowadays there are ancients groups on FaceBook and (FaceBook-owned) Instagram, but I'm ideologically opposed to FaceBook, and have never had an account there, and really reluctant to do so. I'd imagine they may be active, but OTOH I've never seen anyone comment on seeing anything interesting on either site, so there's that!

I do read Reddit AncientCoins occasionally but there seems very little real discussion there. A bit odd since it has 49.5K members (!!), but seems to only get a couple dozen new threads per day, mainly ID requests etc.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AncientCoins/

What other sites do people read (and who reads any of the above)? Are there any other sites where there is much activity and things of interest posted ?

2. CoinTalk

3. r/Ancient coins on reddit

4. Occasionally Coincommunityforum

5. Ancient and Medieval coins FB page, but I haven't posted anything there yet.

6. I used to visit Worldofcoins.eu for south Indian coin discussions, but I don't have an account there.

Just here. Used to at CT but I have strong disagreements with the positions that site (and many people there) supports, so I don’t participate there anymore. Though I still from time-to-time advertise on CT the coins I’m selling because their money is still good 😁.

I also used to post at CoinCommunity but the website is still stuck in 2004 with its site layout, and there isn’t as much in the way of good discussions like there are here (just seems mostly like ID requests and sharing new coins), as well as most of the people I know being here on NF. Also, the max image size that’s allowed is only 300 kb, so there’s that too.

R/ancient coins on Reddit I very occasionally check out (typically only if it comes up in my search results when I’m researching a new coin) but I have never posted in, because I’m protective of my Reddit profile and any coins I post there under that profile (that I happen to use for other, non-coin related subreddits) could be linked to me if I also post them here on NF (or elsewhere). I’m thinking of making an alternate account there just for posting my coins, though.

FB, Instagram, and the like I don’t use.

Coins of the Gallic Empire (Monnaies de l’Empire Gaulois). The best place in the world to talk about these rulers’ coinage. It’s in French, but you can post in English if it’s easier for you. Not very busy and and only a few dozen members, but all experts frequent this site. You are all welcome.

When it comes to ancients, this is THE place for me. I got a lot of help here and you people are great!

I have been on CT here and there lately but the handful of people I pretend don't exist are ignored in my settings so I don't mind.

I don't post in CCF. I might post in the Buy Sell Trade section but not much happens there for me anymore, Mods with huge EGOS that became members years and even a decade after I had joined quickly started getting pushy and rude. There's only a couple of the staff there that I like but it gets kind of old with stupid non errors and minor die issues on Lincoln zinc cents.

For me, other than NF, it's:

Coin Community Family's ancients/medieval board

And, to a lesser extent:

Parthia-L Discussion Group

https://groups.io/g/Parthia-L

Forum's Discussion Board

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php

World of Coins

http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/

Ancient Artifacts

This is the only coin forum on which I've posted regularly since the place was founded last year.

I do read all the posts on the Ancient and Medieval Coins group on Facebook, and the affiliated Ancient and Medieval Coins Sales group, where I've bought a number of coins. Sometimes I post factual information, but I rarely if ever post about my own coins; I'm a bit wary of doing so under my real name.

I visit Forvm's discussion board every couple of weeks, but have posted there only a couple of times in total over the last several years. It's really not terribly active, and not terribly well-suited to the "show and tell" -type posts, coin games, etc., that we have here, and which I consider great fun, even they aren't serious enough for Forvm!

Once in a while, such as when there's a big numismatic news story, I read the German coin forum cited above, as automatically translated by Chrome.

And then there's Coin Talk, where I was one of the more active posters in the Ancients forum from January 2020 to the Spring of 2022. You all know what happened around that time. I haven't posted a single word there since then -- after all, there were a couple of members who couldn't stand me and told me, in words or substance, "good riddance, you won't be missed"! -- but I still take a look every now and then to see if anyone has posted anything interesting. I don't think I've missed much, given that the activity there has probably declined by well over 50% since the great exodus.  And most of the interesting threads that do get posted are simply duplicates of threads also posted here by those who remain active on both forums. But there are still a couple of knowledgeable posters there who rarely if ever post here (e.g., GinoLR and the poster named "Curtis" who shares my interest in Roman Alexandrian coins, among other things), which is why I do check the place on occasion.

For ancient artifacts, @Kamnaskires has mentioned the groups.io forum devoted to that subject, and I strongly recommend it. I subscribe to the daily digest and post occasionally to ask about the authenticity and/or interpretation of items such as Egyptian scarabs and Roman oil lamps. There are some true experts there.

I post only here since the great schism with CT last year. I do visit there, primarily because I posted hundreds of coins over there and I go to copy and paste attributions and photos for easy posting here. Moreover, I link to my previous posts over there in some of my Faustina Friday segments. Basically, I view it as a big archive of my writings on ancient numismatics over a six or seven year period.

There isn't much activity there anymore and the most interesting posts are duplicates of posts here. Here is where all the action is. There are people whose presence around the board I miss, but it's not because they are hanging around elsewhere: @TIF, @dougsmit, and @curtislclay, for example. Their posts and comments were always insightful and educational.

I'm more active here, because there's more participation, but I still do post over on Coin Talk as well. When I create a thread I will often post it to both places. I don't know if this counts as "cross-posting", but if so I don't see the problem with it, and it's never bothered me when others do the same.

The only issue with cross-posting the same thing in more than one forum is when the poster asks for help with a question or problem, and someone provides the answer or solution in forum A, but the poster doesn't mention that in forum B, and as a result people there waste their time continuing to try to help.

Yes.

Creating a "show and tell" thread on multiple forums, seems fine to me. Also, creating a discussion thread on multiple forums, for example a thread to discuss the pros and cons of slabbing, or whether an auction house is doing bad things, seems fine to me. Because, some persons may read and post on 1 forum, but not on the other forum, and it allows persons on both forums to benefit from the thread topic and thread original post.

Creating a question thread on multiple forums, for example asking for ID help on a coin, seems like it could cause people to waste time. Unless the person creates the question thread on 1 forum, and doesn't get an answer after a reasonable amount of time, perhaps 1 week or so. Or, if the question is urgent. If either of those scenarios happens, then after the question is answered, then it seems that it would be helpful, for the person to announce on both threads on the 2 forums, that the question has been answered, and to give a link to the thread where the question was answered.

I only post here for the last year or so. But I also go to check out new stuff on Nummus Bible, Numismatik Forum, La Moneta (I use it for medieval Italian) and some Facebook groups, mostly for Flemish medieval collectors. On Facebook I sometimes help out with IDs and I used to comment in NF, NB and La Moneta but I haven't since a long time. I find that European groups that have most of their communication in their national language are less open to foreigners, even those participating in that language. I'm not complaining in the least, it's just a personal observation. Many regulars there are also acquaintances irl, so it makes sense that the core groups are more focused on each other. Most forums are not as welcoming as CT was back in 2012-2016 or as NumisForum is today.

  • 2 weeks later...

I, too, regret what happened to the coin hobby online and any part I had to do with it.  I still believe that the current market overprices coins of no particular desirability so am currently out for a while or permanently (to be determined).  It was fun while it lasted but became contentious and stopped being fun.  Today was the biggest show in my state but I decided not to go.  A couple of my favorite sellers died and shows are not what they once were here either.   I read Facebook more for coins lately but don't know why unless it is that I am very active there in my other hobby and it is easier to follow.
