Holding bow... Taras, Calabria 315-302 BC (Period V - From Alexander the Molossian to Kleonymos) AR Didrachm (22mm, 7.63g, 4h) O: Warrior, preparing to throw spear and holding shield and two more spears, on horse rearing right; ΣA below. R: Phalanthos, holding arrow and bow, astride dolphin right; |-HP and HP monogram below, TAPAΣ to left. D'Andrea XXXVII, 777; Vlasto 631; Fischer-Bossert Group 68, 818; Evans V, B18; SNG ANS 1011; HN Italy 938 From Group SGF. ex CNG Sir Arthur Evans places this coin at the end of Period V, during the time of Kleonymus, and the martial themes on both sides of this coin, unusual on Tarentine coinage, may support this theory. Kleonymus, the unworthy heir to the Spartan throne, was yet another in a line of self-serving mercenary generals to come to the aid of Taras (circa 302 BC), but he was no more successful than his predecessors.

Yeah, The Hu are cool. Mongol hoards riding over the crest on Harleys... good stuff! I think Wolf Totem was the song they did with Kid Rock on vocals. Oh well, I still like them anyway. They played Portland a few months ago but I didn't have the drachmas. ~ Peter -

Sad news. The mellatron master. Wasn't he the only original member from that first 'Go Now' album? Danny Laine (Wings) was in that band too. A friend of mine once told me "you know you're getting old when rock stars start dying of natural causes". 🙁 -
Mt Baker in Washington is about 250 north of me. The Sisters in Oregon are about 100 miles to the southeast.

A ram is a sheep, right? I have always loved this artist, and when I'm crossing the bar I would like to hear this song as I drift away for the last time... I read the Barry Cunliffe which of course is mostly speculation, but it is argued very logically and reads much like a Pausanias travel guide.

In 1998 some friends of mine started a community garden at another friend's house not to far from me. I saw this as an opportunity to do something I'd always wanted to do, stand some really big stones on their end. My wife and I had recently watched a show on PBS about the stones at Stonehenge and the great obelisk at Alexandria, with two groups putting their theories to practice and I thought "we could do that". So I spoke with a friend who was a rigger for a local power company, and another who was a geological engineer. We decided we could do it, but we wanted to erect the stones with no modern equipment. A year later we erected the uprights (14 tons of columnar basalt), and 15 months after that we placed the lintel, (3.5 tons of granite). All this was done with ropes and simple pulleys, and a LOT of volunteers pulling on the ropes! Over the next decade we added smaller stones around to make a circle It was one hell of an experience which none of us will ever forget. ~ Peter

Yes, Bruford was there full-time live drummer for the first post-Gabriel tour (Trick of the Tail). And as much as I love him as a drummer (I saw him with Genesis, King Crimson, Yes and solo) I believe Chester Thompson was a better fit. And Phil did excellent work on Frida's first album too, playing, singing and producing. You might also get a kick out of the album he did with Cafe Jacques. ~ Peter
