I enjoy coins of Valerian II

It's a new side interest, coins of Valerian II from western mints (especially the divus types) and AE's of Herennius Etruscus and Hostilian, respectively.  Valerian II is a very new side interest, as I only have one other example, a rather grotty one.

This order is my most recent order from Savoca; I'm still waiting on my previous order from another dealer.  It arrived very quickly!  The order was Wednesday, and it was delivered Monday.  I changed one word in my delivery instructions and Fedex is now putting it in the right place.

I've wanted a Marcius Philippus for a long time.  This is a decent placeholder until I can upgrade to a really nice one. The 15mm. description (and the 18mm. of Carinus) worried me a bit, but the coin is a bit oblong, and they must have just measured the coins across. The other silver coins are brightly cleaned but the Philippus either has dark cabinet toning or original hoard patina. It's dark but not black like the picture.

The Carinus was just a throw-in, purely because of the patina.  It looks less neat in person, just a regular Ant with a decent patina. I thought it might be aqua; it's a forest green.

The Nero wasalso a throw-in.  I've only bought a couple of Nero's since 2014, and he is my namesake, after all.

Feel free to post any issues of ValerianII, Caesar.

Nice coins! My only Valerian II has an ugly portrait… but I like it.

2 coins of Valerian II for me. One posthumous and one from his lifetime (although not a coin to brag about)

Still waiting to add an example with Jupiter on goat.

I really like the Nero portrait!

I want to add the Jupiter on goat type next.

I purchased the best example (in my opinion) of the ones in stock at Savoca.  While one can find an excellent example easily of the Philippus (another near-term goal), it's hard to find a really great Valerian II.  The dies are usually worn and mushy, especially from Cologne, my favorite mint ofthe period.

It appears that shipping from the UK seems to be longer than pre-strike so Savoca might become my #1 European dealer.  Shipping went up a tad to $24, but that's not bad for super-fast shipping from Europe.

Coins of Valerian II are tough to find nice and problem-free. It took about 7 years, but I finally found this one late last year. I like how it shows him closer to his actual age - probably 14-17, instead of as a little kid

And my posthumous Valerian II

(Anyone else find it really weird how Saloninus never got a consecration issue? Daddy must have been playing favorites!)

Is Valerian II playing a flute on that second coin?

Not something I particularily collect, but I happen to have a few coins of his. I agree they're hard to find in nice condition. The only really acceptable one I have is the Consecratio/altar down there :

The only Valerian II I have is an Alexandrian tetradrachm, the type that's already twice in this thread.

I bought this coin from the N.M.McQ. Holmes collection that was sold in 2019 by CNG. A British collection specializing in the Valerian-Gallienus dynasty 253-268, that to me yielded many interesting but ugly coins: Beasts, not Beauties! The catalog is very useful and informative for whoever collects coins of this period, do you know it, @Nerosmyfavorite68

My coin is not very attractive, but interesting with its inexpressive obverse head and crafty, strong reverse eagle. Valerian II never had the chance to impress anyone with his military or diplomatic skills. He died in unclear circumstances in Illyria where he had been positioned as Caesar – as a lad of fifteen. It was deadly dangerous to be a member of an imperial family.

Potin tetradrachm Valerian II as caesar (256-258). Alexandria year 5 = 257/8. Π Obv. ΛIK KOP OVAΛεPIANOC KAIC CεB, bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Eagle standing left, head right with wreath in its beak, wings closed; L Є (date) across field. 23 mm, 11.24 gr. Emmett 3764.5. Ex Classical Numismatic Auctions XIV (20 March 1991), lot 547. CNG auction 442 lot 835, N.M.McQ. Holmes collection, April 17, 2019.
