Edessa Posted March 22, 2023 · Supporter Share Posted March 22, 2023 Septimius Severus, AD 193-211. Æ Dupondius (25mm, 11.58g, 6h). Rome mint struck AD 193. Obv: IMP CAE L SEP-SEV PER[T AVG]; Head right with radiate crown. Rev: VICT AVG [TR] P COS; Victory with wreath and palm branch; S-C across fields. Ref: RIC 659v (obverse legend SEPT); Cohen 684v (same); BMCRE page 120, top entry *. Good Fine, nice glossy brown patina, numerous slight scratches on both sides with some light field smoothing noted. Obverse die match to Lanz 121 (22 Nov 2004), Lot 438. The Lanz coin is an example of RIC 664 with the personification of Saeculum Frugiferum reverse and is the only other middle bronze RIC lists with the "SEP SEV" obverse legend. RIC lists 664 has having a laureate head right, but this is evidently in error as RIC refences Cohen 638 which has a radiate bust as would be expected for a Dupondius. The flip notes that my coin was from CNG 46 (24 June 1998), Lot 2141, which was a multiple coin lot with no pictures. There is one other example of RIC 659 is listed on ACSearch and CoinArchives, Gorny & Mosch 126 (14 Oct 2003), Lot 2574. That coin has both a different obverse and reverse die, but it does have the same obverse legend ("SEP" instead of "SEPT". There is another example in CoinArchives shown as Munzen & Medaillen 49 (20 Nov 2020), Lot 357 that is yet another set of dies with this same obverse legend, but the coin is misdescribed as RIC 651, which is a Sestertius. BMCRE points out that Cohen 684 (Paris) is in error on the obverse legend and gives the correct one with "SEP SEV". However, BMCRE only ascribes only an * to this coin on page 120, without a BM number. The introduction to the second edition indicates that coins marked with an asterisk and not a number are not represented in the BM collection. So apparently Mr. Carson knew of this coin in the Paris collection, but also knew that Cohen had mistakenly put "SEPT" in the obverse legend instead of "SEP". Both Cohen and RIC are apparently in error in listing the obverse legend on this coin. Next: Another Imperial middle bronze with Victory.
