  1. Thanks for all of the input. It will be going back to the dealer. Money hadn't changed hands yet and we have a good relationship.
  2. Hello all. I rarely (almost never) post on anything other than world coins and medals. My expertise lies in German States coinage. That said a coin of Julius Caesar has always been a bucket list type coin, with the type below my preference. This coin was offered to me today at a reasonable price but the dealer is someone that, like myself, deals mostly with world coins. I was hoping a few of you would give me an opinion on authenticity. It appears that the weight is correct. Another concern, he had is listed as an S1399. It appears to me that all of these have a beaded border on both the obverse and reverse which this has on neither. It could be attributed to the smaller diameter but you would think at least some of it would show. 17.5mm 3.9g
  3. Beautiful selection and very difficult to select 3.
  4. My opinion only, but it feels like there are more collectors looking for German States coinage. It is similar to the rising demand and prices for ancients. If you like history and variety you can't go wrong with these. Like @panzerman has said before, even if you have the money of Elon Musk it would be impossible to build a "complete" set.
  5. A couple of weeks ago I attended the Derby City Coin Club show in Louisville, KY. I was able to add my first multiple in quite some time. German States coinage is becoming increasingly scarce as a whole. This is the first multiple thaler I have found at a reasonable price for quite some time. Sorry for the washed out phone picture. Eichstätt (Bishophric). Sede Vacante. 1790 2 Thaler Obverse: Saints above vacant throne Obverse Legend: CAPITULUM EYSTETTENSE - REGNANS SEDE VACANTE, below: 17.V EINE FEINE MARK. Engraver: Johann Peter Werner Reverse: Tree with 15 shields in branches, one shield below trunk, abbey and lands in background Reverse Legend: EX UNO OMNIS NOSTRA SALUS, below: WILIBALDS-BURG. in band Engraver: Johann Peter Werner Subject: Sede Vacante Issue Note: Convention 2 Thaler. Dav. #2212. Composition: Silver Weight: 56.03g Diameter: 52.5mm Mint: W Nuremberg, Germany These are something that I don't really look for. When I do, the ones I find are usually priced well out of my budget. This one kind of fell into my lap. A dealer friend of mine knows that I like these and will let me know when he has one. We both win in that case.
  6. These are the only thing I have to offer. An 1844 dated sllver medal And this 1800 dated....I can't remember the word for it. I seen several of these listed for sale since I bought mine.
  7. I'll pile on with one I used to own.
  8. Here are my only pieces of Spanish empire gold. Colombia 1794 8 Escudos Peru 1782 8 Escudos And this one is a bit later but still cool. Chile 1845 8 Escudos
  9. 2 recent additions that I think fit the topic. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel Commemorative Thaler Clausthal. On the conquest of the city of Braunschweig. The 2nd one doesn't technically fit the topic because it is a medal but I hope no one minds me posting it. Catalog: Mehl 676, Zepernick 145, Cappe 311. Diameter: 56.0 mm Weight: 43.67g Obverse: Mary enthroned on clouds with the baby Jesus points with a scepter to the monastery coat of arms floating in front of her, covered with a prince's hat, which rests on a decorated cushion with a cross and is decorated with a crook, sword and palm branch, above the Holy Spirit shown as a dove in rays, around coat of arms wreath Reverse: On a three-tiered dais with a canopy stands the bishop's chair, which is covered with the miter, in the background r. the Hildesheim Cathedral, above the divine eye of providence in rays, around heraldic wreath
  10. Not modern but I just added this my collection: Peru, Charles III, 1759-1788, 1782 LM-MI, 8 Escudos, AU/UNC, Lima mint, KM82.1, Fr-32. Composition: Gold (.901) Weight: 27.0674 g Diameter: 36 mm The bonus for me is that it included an old Mehl envelope. How about that price!!!
  11. This is my favorite. I believe this qualifies as shattered.
  12. I just picked up this common Bulgaria Gros of Ivan Aleksander. It has nice surfaces. It's nicer than the photo shows. And then won this lot of Russian wire money from a CNG auction. I'm kind of regretting it now because I need to attribute all of them.
  13. It's not the same as thumbing through the books but here is an on-line resource for Davenport numbers. I use it frequently. https://coinvarieties.com/index.php/Silver_crowns_by_Davenport_number
  14. I'm not sure this helps or not. I think your guess is as good as any. Did you see that Heritage has sold a number of Senators pins over the years. None of them are matches but there are some similarities. https://sports.ha.com/c/search-results.zx?N=790+231+55&Nty=1&Ntt=washington+senators+pin&ic10=ArchiveTab-071515
  15. some more: Angola 1814 Macuta Weight: 16g Diameter: 36mm Azore 1795 20 Reis Weight: 13g Diameter: 35mm German East Africa 1909 5 Heller Weight: 20 g Diameter: 37 mm India - Tanga Portuguese Goa Weight: 37 g Diameter: 34 mm
  16. This is a topic I could go on for a while about. Large coppers are some of my favorite coins. The Russian 5 Kopeks are some of my favorite coins. That said. Here are some others. Sweden 1684 Ore Weight: 40.5 g Diameter: 46.3 mm Canada Leslie Token WEIGHT: 28 g DIAMETER: 40.3 mm Great Britain Birmingham Workhouse 3 Pence token Weight: 69.1 g Diameter: 45 mm
  17. The problem is that most of the good books are written in German. I can't speak or read German. Google translate helps but can be quite time consuming. I have all of the Davenport books which is the best reference in my opinion but as you said, is sparse on details. There is a harder to find although reasonably priced when you do: Germanic Coinages: Charlemagne through Wilhelm II by William D. Craig This has a lot of good information that you can't find anywhere else. Written in English THE COINS OF THE GERMAN STATES by Kurt Jaeger & Albert Pick This is a 12 volume softcover set that is very informational, but written in German Loser-Thaler by Duve Another nice inexpensive book when you can find a copy. This concentrates on multiple thalers. Written in German I know you said European but my focus is on Germany.
  18. I enjoyed reading that article as well. Not sure why but I found the description of creating the display case designs fascinating.
  19. I have one to add as well. In addition I have 3 denominations of plate money but no images at the moment. Obverse: Warrior with sword and shield with the three crowns of Sweden, date below. Lettering: WETT OCH WAPEN 1717 Reverse: Value in shield supported by a lion. At sides arms and flags, below two crossed cornucopias Lettering: I. DALER S.M
