Coinmaster Posted April 7 · Member Share Posted April 7 (edited) Hi all, after I recently lost a Lucius Verus denarius in an auction, I'm now happy with this new acquisition! As I mostly collect one coin of each emperor, I'm very pleased with this nice portrait and to color a green square in my Roman emperors Excel overview. It wasn't a bargain, but, as the saying goes: 'Long after the price is forgotten, the quality will be remembered.' 😉 Münzen Gut-Lynt GmbH > Auction 15, Auction date: 6 April 2024, Lot number: 248 Lucius Verus, 161-169 Denar 166 Rom L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX. Büste nach rechts. Rv. TR P VI IMP IIII COS II, [im Abschnitt PAX]. Stehende Pax mit Füllhorn und Zweig nach links. RIC 561. 3.09 g. Gutes sehr schön / Good very fine. See also in ERIC and DIR. Does someone has more information about this coin type? And please do share your own Lucius Verus coins, thanks! ambr0zie Posted April 7 · Member Share Posted April 7 A great coin. The toning is excellent, the only (minor) minus is the weak strike/worn die as the olive branch is not fully struck and the PAX exergue is off the flan. But again, MINOR. The attribution is correct. I don't think any other info can be provided. My Verus coins: 1. from the first lot I purchased 18,5 mm, 2,5 g. Lucius Verus 161-169 AD. AR denarius. Rome. 161-162. IMP L AVREL VERVS AVG, Head, bare, right / PROV DEOR TR P II COS II, Providentia standing left, holding globe and cornucopiae. RIC III Marcus Aurelius 482; Cohen 155; BMC 202. 2. a posthumous denarius 18 mm, 2,70 g. Divus Lucius Verus. Died 169 AD. AR denarius. Rome. DIVVS VERVS, head of Lucius Verus, bare, right / CONSECRATIO, funeral pyre in four tiers (ustrina), adorned with statues and garlands, quadriga on top. RIC III Marcus Aurelius 596B; RSC 55; BMC 503. 3. a sestertius 32 mm, 20,98 g. Lucius Verus 161-169 AD. Æ sestertius. Rome. 163-164. L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, head of Lucius Verus, laureate, right / TR P IIII IMP II COS II S C, Victory, winged, half-draped, standing right, fixing to a palm-tree with left hand shield inscribed VIC AVG RIC III Marcus Aurelius 1397; BMC 1116. 11

If Im not mistaken, the coin is struck 166 AD which could correspond with the conclusion of the Parthian war in the east. Hence pax on the reverse, and the title parth max and imp IIII on the obverse. Several other coins also refer to that war. See below my issue. Marcus Aurelius also struck similar issues. 9 1
Ocatarinetabellatchitchix Posted April 7 · Member Share Posted April 7 Nice one Anton. This coin commemorates the victories of Lucius Verus over the Parthians (Victoria Parthica) and the return to peace on the eastern border of the Empire. The triumph was accompanied by a donativum and a fourth imperial acclamation for Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. 2
Roman Collector Posted April 7 · Patron Share Posted April 7 38 minutes ago, Coinmaster said: Does someone have more information about this coin type? And please do share your own Lucius Verus coins, thanks! Beautiful coin, with lovely toning, @Coinmaster! That's from the 13th emission of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. From the titulature, we know it dates from August 166 - 9 December 166 CE. That type was issued only in the denarius denomination. Yours is laureate. It is also known with a bare-headed bust, but that's a very rare variety, unlisted in the major references, but it occasionally comes up for auction (Heidelberger Münzhandlung Herbert Grün e.K. (Auction 63), 15.5.2014, lot 155; also Auctiones GmbH (eAuction #40), 20.9.2015, lot 84, and a few others). It was issued in tandem with Marcus Aurelius's M ANTONINVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX/TRP XX IMP IIII COS III/PAX denarii, such as this one in the British Museum. Here's a Lucius Verus from my collection. I like its "all-round" legend. 11 1
CPK Posted April 7 · Supporter Share Posted April 7 @Coinmaster That is a beautiful coin, and as you say it is always worth buying quality when you can!
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted April 7 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted April 7 (edited) Nice OP coin. For me, I have a worn but supposedly rare AE As...featuring Verus' riding down a foe...even though he was somewhat lazy (unlike Marcus) and didn't directly participate in military activities. I purchased it for $300 from Frank Robinson. Edited April 7 by Ancient Coin Hunter 10
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted April 7 · Member Share Posted April 7 That's a beautiful piece in the OP. I'd be very happy with it, too. I only have 3 coins of Verus, none of which are as nice as the OP, one being a Christmas present. 11

Ursus Posted April 8 · Supporter Share Posted April 8 Splendid coin! Mine is in lesser grade and from the following year. The numbers after Lucius Verus' titles in the reverse legend have progressed by one or two each: Lucius Verus, Roman Empire, denarius, 167/168 AD. Rome mint. Obv: L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX, laureate head of Lucius Verus right. Rev: TR P VIII IMP V COS III, Aequitas seated left, holding scales and cornucopiae. 18mm, 2.62g. Ref: RIC III Marcus Aurelius 595. 9
Boomer Simpson Posted April 9 · Member Share Posted April 9 This is my only Lucius Verus Denarius, I'm quite happy with it. It's also my most expensive, but adding it to my Antonine Emperor Denarii set was well worth the cost. The strike is a little bit weak on the reverse, but I can forgive that; It adds character. Laureate head of Lucius Verus right "L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX" Pax standing left, holding a branch and cornucopiae "TR P VI IMP IIII COS II", "PAX" in exergue.
