Octavius Posted March 9 · Supporter Share Posted March 9 I also, have found that the most difficult pleasing portraits to find are those of Valerian as well as his son Gallienus. Here are a couple of the best I could find .... 8

Nice score! I didn't bid on it, but I ended up winning another coin from that auction - somewhat unexpectedly as I anticipated being outbid during the live session. Busted🥲 Yes pretty nice auction this time! What did you win mate?

Tejas Posted March 10 · Member Share Posted March 10 Greate coins shown here. These are among my best portraits of Valerian. Clearly, the different mints had no single image of him to work from. 7
Ursus Posted March 12 · Supporter Share Posted March 12 (edited) The quality of Valerian's portraits differs greatly from mint to mint and from series to series. As the posts by @Finn235 , @Sulla80 and @Octavius above illustrate, the "APOLINI PROPVG" reverse, for example, often comes with nicer than usual portraits. Below is my example. I paid through the nose for it but don't regret the purchase. Valerian I, Roman Empire, AR antoninianus, 253/4 AD, Rome mint. Obv: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS AVG; bust of Valerian, radiate, draped, cuirassed, r. Rev: APOLINI PROPVG; Apollo, nude except for cloak flying behind, standing r., drawing bow. 22mm, 3,58. Ref: RIC V Valerian 74; MIR 36, 44d. Edited March 12 by Ursus 6
Benefactor robinjojo Posted March 12 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted March 12 (edited) This is my only example with a halfway decent portrait is this provincial coin, rather crude and with somewhat rough surfaces. I wonder what was in those urns on the reverse. Valerian I, Æ 30, Anazarbus, Cilicia. CY 272 (253/4 AD) . )RPC X Online Unassigned ID 60270 (this coin cited) 17.85 grams Edited March 12 by robinjojo
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted March 13 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted March 13 My only Valerian is a ho hum Antoninianus with Fortuna Redux, Rome mint. I'm currently looking to add a quality sestertius matching my Gallienus example, but have yet to see the right one. Hopefully that will occur soon.

If I were a lowly diecutter asked to create an image of the most powerfuL (and usually vainest) man in the world I think I would err on the side of handsome rather than ugly. I agree with romancollector, Val baby was probably what we would call in these parts a bit of a minger. Mine was maybe the best the guy in Samosata could do... That said, perhaps in this case he wasn't the most powerfuL, Shapur was? Edited March 13 by mcwyler
