Al Kowsky Posted December 16, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 16, 2022 CNG E-Auction 529 had a lot of low-end material for a change, with many lots selling for less than $100, & only 6% went unsold. I managed to win two provincial Tets & one medal that I'll post when they arrive 😊. The most expensive lot was a "new style" Athens Tet that hammered for $3,250. The coin had an impressive provenance going back to 1929 😮, see the attached photo & link below it. https://auctions.cngcoins.com/lots/view/4-854MFQ/attica-athens-circa-165-42-bc-ar-tetradrachm-27mm-1669-g-12h-new-style-coinage-epigene-sosandros-and-moschi-magistrates-struck-1254-bc-in-ngc-encapsulation-4280853-001-graded-ch-xf-strike-55-surface-45

Roman Collector Posted December 16, 2022 · Patron Share Posted December 16, 2022 I put in what I considered to be a very competitive bid on a sestertius of Diva Faustina the Elder with the temple reverse -- and lost.
Kazuma78 Posted December 16, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 16, 2022 I won a copy of Hirsch XV which I had been looking to find for awhile, for the sale of the Gustav Philipsen Collection, which I have a coin from. I was happy to get it, but bummed that the shipping from the UK office was $35.

Cordoba Posted December 16, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 16, 2022 I got my first artifact as well, I was always leery of buying antiquities because I don't know how to tell real from fake, but Ken Dorney's sale seemed like a good opportunity to get an artifact with good provenance GREEK. Levant & the Near East. Syro-Palestine, Roman Era, Pottery Juglet. Circa 1st Century CE. Single-handled juglet, 6.5” / 16.5 cm tall, with incised linear decoration. Hayes 312. Benefactor kirispupis Posted December 16, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted December 16, 2022 I didn't bid in the CNG auction. I certainly was tempted at the artifacts, but I feared the horrible things that would happen to me if one arrived in the mail. At least my coins don't take much room to store. An artifact that takes up display cabinet space (which we don't have) would not have been viewed favorably. 🙂 I did participate in the last Roma auction, and I won five coins there - two Greek bronzes and three Cappadocian coins. Benefactor KenDorney Posted December 16, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted December 16, 2022 I have been getting less and less with CNG, so I didnt get anything in this one. I am hopeful for the new auction which has a load of things I am interested in, but we will have to see where they end up on closing day! As others have posted, I sold my antiquities collection which did fairly well. @Cordoba, you will see your pot in the very center of the photo below, taken some 30 years ago. 6

NewStyleKing Posted December 16, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 16, 2022 (edited) This was my eagle and Thunderbolt I sold earlier this year via ROMA. Nearly but a bit more worn as that sold on CNG but the CNG was not outstanding particularly! Difference? Not in plastic and no provenance except c 126 BCE. The obverse is more artistic in my view! The price was ridiculous so what about provenance? What is the attraction? My Salton collection, one of only 3 examples known and in a plastic tomb late post Sullan NewStyle was less than $2000 this year! Eagle on thunderbolts are VERY common even in goodish condition, they are one of the 4 over-represented NewStyles as per deCallatay found in Bulgaria and the like. People DO have more money than sense, this proves it. I don't know what the provenance was was it someone ridiculously famous? I see E T Newell.... who but sad coin collectors would even have heard of him.......I thought it was someone FAMOUS! The coin appears scratched a slightly worn to my eyes CRAZY! Bewildered.
