France, Provincial. Lorraine, Diocese of Metz. Stephan von Bar, Bishop, AD 1120-1163. AR Denier (15mm, 0.68g, 11h). Metz mint. Obv: STEPHANI; Cross with two rosettes and two balls in the angles. Rev: +[DES]-PINAL; Abbey Saint Goery. Ref: Boud 1618; Flon 25. Good Fine, nicely toned, normal striking weakness, reverse double struck. Said to be from the Barbarossa Treasure.

From Wikipedia: Stephen of Bar took part in the Second Crusade in 1147 with his brother Rainald I the One-Eyed , Count of Bar, Mousson and Altkirch . Stephen was buried in Metz Cathedral "iuxta chori".

Thibaut II, Comte de Troyes et Provins (Champagne), 1125-1152.

Obv.  (in field, from 9 o'clock:) TEBO monogram.

+TRECAS CIVITAS.

Rev.  Cross, annulet and bezant in two angles.  +BEATVS PETRVS (Peter, patron saint of Troyes).

Adam, Corpus des monnaies feodales champenoises, pp. 78, 80-2, nos. 181-91, with minor legend variants.

I like this one for riffing on the bilingualism in contemporary English pennies, with obverse legends in Latin, and reverse mint signatures and moneyers in (Old-) early Middle English.  Here the vernacular element shows up only in the 'Tebo' monogram.  The medieval Latin would have been along the lines of 'Theobaldus;' phonetically, this clearly indicates the French equivalent.

Andronicus, succesor of Alexius II (Young son of Manuel I Comnenus.) This fellow was a real piece of work, convinced Alexius II to kill his own mother then had Alexius II killed. Took Alexius young bride as his own, she was around 12, he was around 70. He ruled from 1183 to 1185 , the last of the Comnenus line in that century.

This example is near perfect, it is A city tetarteron nicely struck and has aged well.

The thirty-sixth period starts - year 1200 to 1250.

The Byzantine Empire begins to fall, but we still have some emperors in this period:   Isaac II, Alexios III, IV, V, Theodore I and John III. I can't find coins for all of them. You Byzantium collectors will know better.

Holy Roman German emperors: Otto IV, Friedrich II,

In China: The Southern Song Dynasty with the emperors Ning Zong and Li Zong and  the Xi Xia Dynasty

and again too many across the world to mention them all.

Another treasure the mid 13th century. In Wayne Sayles book Ancient Coin Collecting Volume V, he lists this as a Masterpiece of Romaion coinage. I have had many examples but none as nice as this.  I love the head of hair on St George.
