The Oxford half pound and pound coins of Charles I, are very difficult indeed to locate, especially without issues with contact marks, wear and mishandling, among other things. I was fortunate to be able to purchase this coin back back in the 1980s, before slab mania set in.

The spelling of the Xi differs from all other Kang Xi coins due to the missing dash on the left. The veneration of the emperor, the connection to his birthday and the rumor that the coins should contain gold, led to the fact that the actually simple cash coins got amulet character, and were carried as such until the 20th century.

KM 40 26.69 grams Luis I succeeded his father, Philip V, in 1724. Philip, who was wary of ruling Spain since the War of the Spanish Succession, stepped down to make way for his young son. However, Luis' reign lasted only seven months, from January 15 to August 31, 1724, making his reign one of the shortest in history. Philip resumed his reign, often called the second period following his son's sudden death at age 17. The impact of his son's death caused chronic, deep depression for Philip for the rest of his life. The colonial mints began issuing coinage with Luis I in the title in 1725. They continued to use that title until 1727, when the title of Philip V was reintroduced, continuing until his death in 1746. The ordinal "I" for "LVIS I" can be seen at near 5 o'clock on the cross side of this coin. Brazil John V, 20000 reis, Minas Gerais 1727. FR 33; KM 117 53.50 grams Mexico, Philip V, 8 reales 1733 F.
