I don't know about that -- I see some mammals on the roof of that temple!

Rats! (Probably scurrying around in the temple basement!) You noticed that, huh? Actually, so did I eventually, but I decided to take my lumps if anyone caught it, rather than blatantly change history. The moving finger writes or something...

Wait, I know! I'll just insist it was a test to see if anyone pays attention. You pass!

Oops! Ryro wins!

I've always considered these two coins (and others from the same hoard) as having genuine fundpatina, although I don't know how I could "prove" that.

Wonderful surfaces. Which is the hoard you are referring to? (if it can be said)

Hi @antwerpen2306, your best bet is to refresh the page just before you post: this varies from browser to browser, on mine it is a right click then a little circle arrow icon:

Then make sure you are on the last (most recent) page: - check the bottom of posts:

Yes this post is a bit of a nightmare for this. If you click on an alert, it might not take you to the last post. Then when you hunt for a coin that fits, someone else posts while you're editing and your window doesn't show it. I keep a separate window open to refresh just before I post, to make sure no-one got there first 😂

A couple of months back I finally sat down with my copy of Early Japanese Coins and worked through about twenty or thirty simple Japanese Kanei Tsuho 1 mon coins that I have had for a few years but never really messed with. The calligraphy bears subtle but unmistakable differences between types and they are really quite fun to differentiate and attribute once you get a hang of it (made easier with good books). These two examples have pretty different Tsu characters (right character at 3 o'clock). The shape of each line and angles of the shapes and body parts of the characters are all different.

This isn't an "official" hoard, in the sense of one that's been recognized and properly recorded. I've surmised the existence of an otherwise unknown hoard based on the market appearance, over a couple of years, of a number of coins from the period just after the introduction of the denarius and its fractions, all displaying identical color, surfaces and wear to the two coins in question. Most of these coins were offered by a single firm (Gorny & Mosch), lending credence to the notion that they all were found together. It's an educated guess really; one that I'm pretty confident about. I'm not being coy or evasive; I really don't have any "inside knowledge" about this hoard, just what I've noticed through careful observation.
