  1. It was a Dr Arnold-Peter Weiss, the then-owner of Nomos. I don't think he's still involved with Nomos. https://www.coinworld.com/news/world-coins/weiss-enters-guilty-plea-on-confiscated-coins.html ATB, Aidan.
  2. Mostly obverse, but often the reverses are the interesting parts, so a bit of each - here are a couple of trays of sestertii... ATB, Aidan.
  3. I first heard of Rodrigo y Gabriela from some Spanish friends in the early 2000s - someone had heard them playing in a pub in Rathmines (I think) and we went to see them a few times. They're Mexican and moved to Europe to pursue music and ended up in Dublin where their careers really took off. The last time I saw them was as a support for the Stone Roses quite a while ago, but they're still going strong and I see they'll play in Dublin again in October. Anyway, here they are in Grafton St., long after they'd "made it". Here's a coin from Mexico City with some interesting chopmarks. Coin: 1796 FM 8 Reales CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA 1796 - Laureate, draped cuirassed bust right HISPAN ET IND REX M 8R F M - Crowned arms between pillars Shape: Round. Mint: Mexico City Wt./Size/Axis: 26.50g / - / 0h Acquisition: Ibercoin Online #2154 29-Nov-2011 ATB, Aidan.
  4. It happens... I managed to buy these three examples of Cr. 244/1 in September 2020 - it was only after the first auction that I realised I'd bids in on two more. Which, in strict compliance with Murphy's Law, I won as well. It happened again today - I wanted two coins in the Tintinna auction, but ended up with 7 because I watched it live. One of the coins I wanted wasn't attributed correctly and I won it, so good, but another coin wasn't attributed correctly and with the timer running out, I realised I didn't have the type listed, so clicked a few times and outbid whoever was winning. Of course, within about 10s of the auction ending I realised that the attribution was wrong and I had a better example of the type already. Note to self - look at the coins properly before the auction and stick with the plan 😄 ATB, Aidan.

    Roma XXVll

There are quite a few interesting RR coins in the auction, but I've spent a lot already this year, so maybe I can't afford to bid. Aidan.
  6. This was the first appearance of Microdisney in 30 years. And the same song from the full band in 1984... Here's a modern proof set - Ireland 1928. Keep the chunes coming 🙂

  10. All to do with bubbles, I suppose... ATB, Aidan.
  11. I hadn't noticed him before, but he had some nice coins - there was at least one other I considered. I think he's a doctor "In Real Life", so I suppose this is a part time activity. ATB, Aidan.
  12. These were the last two coins I picked up at NYINC. Some cash was burning a hole in my pocket and these looked nice, so... Moneyer: C. ATB, Aidan.
  13. You got it for a very good price. ATB, Aidan,
  14. Just the 21 coins today. For some reason, I bought four tetradrachms of Philip I/II & Trebonianus Gallus and a didrachm of Trajan and a pile of other stuff I don't normally collect. There's a fairly worn RR denarius I wanted and a group lot of four worse ones which had one I needed. I don't remember why I bought the rest - well, a Marius because I didn't have a Marius and the rest probably looked cool and/or were at a good price! From Naville in December - they took forever to come. A similar batch from Artemide is on its way too, ETA this week 🙂 ATB, Aidan.
  15. There's a lot of useful information on Roman Republican coins on Andrew McCabe's site: https://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/ Anonymous Republican denarii and victoriati can be difficult to attribute and tell apart - Crawford catalogues many different types but gives the same descriptions for most of them so we're left to squint at the plates and guess. Well, these pages clarify a lot - for denarii & victoriati: https://stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/ https://www.stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/AnonymousVictoriatii.html ATB, Aidan.
  16. I don't have the Wayne Sayles book, but the others, yes. I have one of Wayne's other books and it's great, so I presume this is also good. In fact, he has a sale at the moment on his Vcoins shop, but doesn't post outside the US, so no good to me! "Coinage in the X World" books are excellent and Sear's Byzantine book is a fairly complete catalogue of Byzantine coins. I've yet to do mich with the ID book, though I have a few Byz coins to attribute, so might give it a whirl. ATB, Aidan.
  17. I've always liked this little coin. State, City: Bithynia, Kios Coin: Silver Hemidrachm - Laureate head of Apollo right ΟΗΝ / ΔΩΡΟΣ - Prow of galley left Mint: (ca 350-300) Wt./Size/Axis: 2.50g / - / 6h References: SG 3757 BMC Pontus pg. 131, 4 Hunterian pg. 242, 1 Acquisition: Mark Rasmussen Irish International Coin Fair 27-Feb-2010 Next - Greek silver.

CaSTeLE in Iberian letters - Boar right; star above; legend below exergual line Mint: Castulo (Late 2nd century BC) Wt./Size/Axis: 2.95g / 16mm / 6h References: Alvarez-Burgos 736 Acquisition: Q.A. Coins AP Auction #17 8-Nov-2015 Next... a boar
  19. It's slightly easier to complete a collection of reference works on coins than the coins themselves - at least, if one sets strict limits to the extent of the collection. And, within such limitations I completed two sets last weekend! At least until new volumes appear, but for now I'm claiming victory. My first coin book purchases of 2023 were RIC V part II and HGC vol. 12, so I now have all current RIC volumes and all the published HGC volumes. There are gaps in the HGC series, so more books are coming and RIC II part 2 is due sometime and I believe other RIC volumes are being worked on. I now need to move things around to find place on the shelves for these with their colleagues. HGC 12 isn't difficult to find, but I have only one Bactrian coin, so didn't see the need for it until I saw it for sale on Sunday, so picked it up! RIC V has been out of print for quite a long time AFAIK and I think the last RIC volume I got was V part I, so I snapped this up when I saw it as well. Has anyone else picked up any interesting books so far in 2023? ATB, Aidan.
  20. Thanks! - I really like it. By some way the biggest coin I have 😄 ATB, Aidan.
  21. I won this in the recent CNG Triton XXVI auction and picked it up on Friday - got home and photographed it yesterday - I think it needs a dark background, but this will do for now. It's a huge coin and looks great in-hand - very happy with it. I need a 6-slot Abafil extra deep tray to fit it. Auction description. Anonymous. Circa 225-217 BC. Æ Aes Grave As (64mm, 249.2 g, 12h).
