  4. Hi All, Hi All, K is also for ... KOINON of Cyrenaica The KOINON was the federal reorganization of Cyrenaica under Ecdemus and Demophanes the Megalopolitian philosophers in ca 250 BCE. It was a federation of five cities which came to be known as the Libyan pentapolis. The first literary reference to this federation is in the first century AD (in the works of Pliny), when the component cities were Cyrene, Apollonia, Ptolemais, Taucheira/Arsinoë and Berenice. This federation was short-lived and ended sometime in 240s BCE, when Ptolemy III (Euergetes I) married Berenice and reunited Kyrene to Egyptian rule. Bagnall (1976): After the death of Magas a period of political confusion ensued for several years. A koinon of the Cyrenaica appears to have flourished briefly, and it issued a silver didrachm of Rhodian standard together with a series of bronzes. The only legend on these coins is KOINON except for one bearing a moneyer's monogram. The issues of the Cyrenaic koinon are the last autonomous coins of Cyrene. Note: Lorber's Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire (CPE) does not count this type as Ptolemaic, so it is not listed there. Note: Listed in Coryssa database [last confirmed 16 Feb 2020]: https://www.coryssa.org/2538646/ . From Lorber's CPE: "Cyrene produced silver tetradrachms and didrachms with the portrait of Ptolemy I and his standard eagle on thunderbolt reverse, as well as portrait bronzes issued in Ptolemy’s name, with the monogram of Magas in the field. This group of bronzes employ five different reverse types, representing four different series (the Pegasus and horse reverses apparently mark different denominations within a single series). The sequence of these series is not certainly known, but the overstriking of Ptolemy/thunderbolt bronzes with the types of the Cyrenaican koinon may indicate that the thunderbolt was the latest reverse type of this group." NEXT: A full Pegasus. - Broucheion

Refs: Lorber CPE-B474; Svoronos-819, pl xxiii, 20 [11 listed]: as Ptolemy II; SNG Köln 113. Notes: Svoronos assigned this series of bronzes to Ioppe (Jaffa) because their mintmark, the harpe, was the weapon of Perseus, who according to myth rescued Andromeda in the harbor of Ioppe. These bronzes complement those of Tyre above and thus belong in the latter reign of Ptolemy III rather than that of Ptolemy II, where Svoronos placed them. - Broucheion

  10. Hi All, When this story came out I asked someone who should know about it. They said that the Egyptian government usually uses that generic fake Arsinoe type whenever coins are found. They try not to show exactly what types of coins are found where, to avoid illicit treasure hunting. - Broucheion

  18. Hi @seth77, Thank you! I wondered about the silver coin when I bought it. It was a knowing gamble but, with the price so low, it would not hurt if it was a fake. I'm a bit surprised the AE would be faked as well. It shows I should stick to the coin types I know and not venture out into uncharted waters without more background. I hope my post and your reply serves as an aid to help others. Both coins came from different UK dealers who may or may not have known they were fakes. - Broucheion

Note 1: An example of this type is known to have been overstruck by Tigranes II, whose overstrikes are mostly over issues of Damascus. Usual commercial sources are: Lebanon & Jerusalem. Note 2 from CSE Coll A Houghton pt II: "Cleopatra Thea initially seized power in her own name in 125, but later in the same year she raised her teenaged son Antiochus VIII to be her co-ruler after slaying Antiochus' elder brother Seleucus when he attempted to succeed Demetrius II as sole Seleucid monarch. With military support from Ptolemy VIII Euergetes, who had become disenchanted with his creature, Alexander II Zabinas, Cleopatra Thea and Antiochus VIII crushed the pretender in 122. This victory expanded their authority from their base at Ptolema'is (Ake) to include some parts of Phoenicia and Coele Syria, Syria Seleucis, and Cilicia. However, the relationship between mother and son was strained and ended in violence when Cleopatra was forced to drink poison. It is said that she had initially prepared the deadly cup for her son, but it is just as possible that Antiochus VIII killed her for reasons other than self-defence. He is known to have had a keen interest in poisons, which he occasionally expressed in poetry." - Broucheion
