  1. I find it amazing how stable certain iconography was on Roman coins. Only yesterday I was looking at the Maximianus issues at Ticinum with the same, or very similar, FIDES MILITVM reverse type. Nice new additions Nero.
  2. Listen to this for a comedy of errors. So, I was wrong. I thought that this envelope had to be for the single coin purchase I was waiting for, because who in their right mind would post a batch of 9 coins wrapped in a bit of tissue paper in a standard paper envelope? The seller of the single coin correctly pointed out that the envelope pictured wasn't the one he sent, but then accidentally refunded me anyway. So now I have to wait for that coin to arrive, figure out a way to get the payment sent back to him, and process a refund for the actual missing coins, using the same images as my first request which makes the whole thing look super dodgy. Unfortunately, the batch of 9 coins contained a very rare London mint coin I am unlikely to find again. Just had to sit through an ebay support chat of shame to try and resolve this lol... Oops.
  3. In postage woe news, just had an empty envelope delivered that at one point contained a nice unreduced nummus for Constantine as Caesar from Trier. A valuable piece of history lost because an idiot posted it out in a simple paper envelope wrapped in some tissue paper.
  4. Welcome to the club Paddy, nice first choice. Any ideas what the text in the wreath signifies?
  5. @Spaniard The reverse on your Gratian is wonderful. Superb style and sense of form, especially on this sort of LRB.
  6. I think from the pictures you've discovered a rarity. I see no traces of any field marks whatsoever. I wonder if a die was used prematurely, and then corrected? Fantastic series! I wasn't aware of it, but it has a real handsome reverse design. Edit: Furthermore, it seems impossible to me that the corrosion, which is extensive but even (and not detracting overly from the eye appeal at all!) which is evenly distributed relatively speaking, could perfectly corrode and make disappear four separate symbols.
  7. Are the pictures in the correct order, with the second picture down with the green tone being the one now offered at auction? If so, that is an incredibly deceptive patination job, equally as scummy as the initial tooling. I think it's clear that they are the same coin, there are way too many exactly similar cracks and marks for it to be otherwise, unless they are (extremely unlikely) both from the same source coin, or it's a mother/daughter situation.
  8. RC, you had me in paranoid mode staring at your OP coin to try and find traces of tooling before I started to read and absorb the text. Was very glad when I reached the actual tooled coin, which is quite obvious in hindsight, but more so on the reverse than the obverse. The SC in the fields are quite crudely raised, and the baby has the tell tale flatter top, but rapidly increasing gradient as the line reach the surface of the coin. Quite a lot of metal has been removed there for sure.
  9. Fascinating stuff, thanks. I've not ventured into the early potins, but I intend to at some point.
  10. Well I've nothing to add other than to say that I look forward to seeing the results.
  11. That's a fascinating slice of history, good hunting! The kind of thing to set the mind wondering.
  12. My very first coin, purchased back in 2019 as a birthday present from my wife, was this Marcus Aurelius denarius. I'm very happy to say I love it as much now as I did then.
  13. I've had pleasant and helpful correspondence with Sam Moorhead and also Lee Toone regarding my coins, both of which were more than glad to help me out. I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to other people in the future. In my experience they are at least as enthusiastic as I am, hence their position. It makes collecting a researching even more enjoyable than it already is.
  14. A few of mine: Dealers who seem to be unable to answer a simple email about a coin simply. I buy most of my coins from ebay, and usually get good responses to any queries. Every time I've purchased from an actual dealer via places like Vcoins, I've either received answers verging on contempt, or I have been simply ignored. Dealers who are unable to post items with a competent turnaround time, and who do not inform you in advance of your order in the myriad ways available to them that there will be a delay. Worst of all, coins entering the dealer graveyard. There are lots of coins that were on the market when I started collecting a few years ago, advertised at ridiculous prices that will never be met. They are still there, and will remain there. Every time I search within my areas of interest I see the same listings over and over and over, and I will continue to see them for all time, because nobody in their right mind would ever pay £150 for a common LRB in relatively bad shape, 5 examples of which have sold in the last 3 months for a tenth of the price.
  15. 5.01.003 Maximianus 'Second Reign' Falmouth Hoard coin, with annotated envelope used by Lord Stewartby in his report on the hoard.
