I had been following this fun coin with a popular reverse and am happy to say that I won it! Purchased from ebay with little description other than weight. So, any corrections to ID are appreciated: Nero (AD 54-68). Æas (10.59 gm). Lugdunum, AD 67. IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR PPP, bare head of Nero right, globe at point / S - C, Victory flying left holding in both hands shield inscribed SPQR. RIC 544. BMCRE 387. Is anyone else stricken with, whenever looking at this type, seeing Victory dribbling a large SPQR branded ball? Nah. I'm just a weirdo? That adds up. Taking a quick look and I only have one other coin with SPQR on it and that a fourrée: Trajan, 98-117. Denarius (Subaeratus, 18 mm, 2.94 g, 6 h), a contemporary plated imitation, after 113. S•P•Q•R•OPTIMO PRINCIPI Trajan's Column: column surmounted by statue of Trajan standing left, holding patera and scepter, and set on podium decorated with eagles. BMC 452. Cohen 558. RIC 292. Woytek 425v. Nicely toned. Minor breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine. There were a number of Roman imperials I was tempted on, but after some investigation the weights seemed way too low on several of them, so I decided against bidding on any. I have no Nero examples nor SPQR. This is probably my closest coin. Here's an SPQR coin, struck a couple hundred years after Trajan made it so popular. That middle standard looks suspiciously like a basketball hoop. CONSTANTINE I, AD 306-337 AE2 (23.15mm, 4.51g, 12h) Struck AD 312-313. Rome mint Obverse: IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate and draped bust of Constantine I right, seen from behind Reverse: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI, legionary eagle facing with wings spread between two standards; RS in exergue References: RIC VI 348a, RCV 16128 A scarce variety. I like the artistic depiction of Victory, the portrait (the hair style is bold) and - important for these issues - that the SPQR lettering on the shield is visible. That wears off easily. When I bought the first lot of ancient coins, I had the chance to find a similar type there. Not an XF coin, but for the price per coin of 3 euros, it's satisfactory. Too bad somebody cleaned it as the coin seemed to have an excellent patina. 26,58 mm, 8,43 g. Nero 54-68 AD. Ӕ as. Lugdunum. 63-68. There were already nice Trajan coins posted here with the usual titulature SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI, so I will post just one - but this one is, I think, inspired by the Nero coins design. 28 mm, 12,76 g. IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM P M, head of Trajan, laureate, right / TR POT COS II P P S C, Victory, draped, advancing left, holding shield inscribed SPQR in right hand and palm in left.
