Greetings from Pittsburgh! At the last minute, I decided to attend this years 2023 ANA World’s Fair of Money! After booking my hotel Sunday, I hopped in the car and drove over Tuesday.

Here is the view from the show floor! I was quite surprised with how large the show actually was and it took more than a day to navigate the whole bourse. Perhaps half of the dealers had ancients of some sort. Compared to NYINC which I attended in January, I would say the ANA show had more ancients overall but NYINC had coins of significantly higher value. For those of us who can’t afford a coin at 6 figures, the ANA probably had more options.

My only purchase of the show was this Byzantine tornese. It sold at Bucephalus a few months back but I forgot to bid…its the second known and only in private hands for the type. The seller had it listed as a normal tornese even though the auction listing identified its rarity. I bought the coin at its original hammer plus BP…a steal at $250

Overall it was quite the experience! As the case tends to be for myself with such shows, its not worth the money spent on hotels and restaurants from a pure coin acquisition aspect. However, being at such a show is an experience unto itself and when else can you spend hours talking trade without boring the other person to tears?

@TheTrachyEnjoyer I was going to post photos of my Wednesday visit but they were not nearly as good as yours! Thank you for posting them!

I hope this isn’t a breach of etiquette, and apologies in advance if it is, just thought I would post my experience at the show. It was my first large coin show. I have only been to smaller coin shows in Cleveland and Columbus respectively. It was overwhelming! Sensory overload to say the least. SO……..MANY…….COINS. It was worth going for the experience to me, but I feel when all is said and done I do better at auctions or smaller shows. The advice received in an earlier post was very helpful( thank you all again!) and I had specific goals but at the end of the day I did not end up getting any ancient coins🤷🏻‍♂️. I did sell some coins and felt overall I received good prices ,so it was the first show where I made money instead of made debt( the wife was pleased, surprised, and perhaps wondering if I was replaced by aliens….).
I talked to Laura Wakeland at the HJB table and she gave me good advice for this show. She said every half hour or so to exit and give my eyes a break and reset my brain because there is so much to look at. She said it would prevent knee jerk purchases, and mistakes. It was very helpful 😀. I bought one coin just because I occasionally like coins with a story. A shipwreck coin as seen in the photos. Long story short( too late!) it was a good experience and I will be better equipped to go to a large show again if I want to in the future. C2CD97A2-97B7-4CAB-8011-8443A996D4A1.jpeg.90c212c77f566f3f7ac03023142b1658.jpeg587D0EC6-E8AF-4059-B1D6-C2B3857A0B7E.jpeg.ccc7a9e9bcce56472dc3825c91ec7532.jpeg

An Awesome report. Thank you for compiling these posts. It is only 4.5 hrs. away for me to go there.  It may have taken a whole day to get around for you but I wouldn't have covered a 1/10 of that. Let me guess . . . was it the undegrading of that coin in the ANACS slab that you found horrendous. Just a guess.

Postumus didn’t mint any coins in Antioch…its a geographical impossibility. The coin is actually Gordian, as the GORDIANUS might have clued the grader in🙈

ANACS just inserted a wrong label. Human errors happen in every field. ANACS should reflect on QC.

It would not stop me buying the coin, whether it is in a usual holder or in a slab with wrong label.

Nope. Postumus did not mint antioch coins. This is a fantasy label created by a quack
