Show me your Nero!

I have a few decent ones. I'm feeling too lazy to re-trot them back out.  Instead I'll show a relatively recent 'bargain' Nero.  It's hard to find a not horrible piece for under $150, yet alone 40-something.

This one was 100 Euros.

My first coin (I bought two at the same time, the other being a Macedonian shield coin) is probably a Nero as or dupondius.  It's awful enough where it was a complete mystery for many years what it was.  However, one can make out a scene on the reverse which looks very much like the two figures on the Annona Augusti sestertii.

I've been trying to sit through the Lives of the Caesars podcasts recently. The foul language doesn't bother me, but the one host is rather annoying.  The one I'm listening to is from the end of Nero's reign.

Nero might not have been the greatest guy, but I sure love his coins, especially those of Lugdunum.

I have 3 Nero provincials. None are great. I have been trying to get an Imperial dupondius with a Victory reverse for some time but I keep getting outbid. Here are my 3 Nero (neros? nerai?)

Why was Nero you favorite? Just curious.

I never owned an Imperial Nero, just provincials.

Hi all, today I received the coin from France (€ 40,- + € 2,50 postage). In hand the coin looks even better than on the photos. The coin looks partly uncleaned to me, do you agree? I think this is a genuine coin, so I'm very happy with it!

I think this is my record for posting the same coin in the same hour (3). It's not even a nice one 🤣

Looks genuine to me. The coin is broken in 3 parts and has been glued. But on the positive side, this makes it very likely that it is indeed genuine and it's barely noticable. Very nice details 🙂 I just wouldn't drop it

I also just added a ΝΕΡΩΝ from Antioch to my collection. I like the portrait:

I had placed a low base bid on the Nero - and had seriously considered going higher - but ended up bidding on other coins.

This one also caught my eye - a very good choice! Congratulations! It's really very beautiful!

Looks ok! Mentioned by @Salomons Cat already, it looks broken and likely glued indeed. The surface could either be uncleaned, or corroded. Maybe gentle try some picking with a wooden toothpick? Be careful, because the coin can be very fragile.

Thank you! Moments like this make me believe that the world of ancient coin collectors is still very small. I find the style of the portrait amazing and really exceptional. After I had looked at probably a few 100 ΝΕΡΩΝs on acsearch and didn't find one that I liked more I knew that I really wanted to bid on this coin.
In the end, there were 20 bids from 11 bidders on it. And I'm really, really glad that it hammered for "only" 625 EUR... I was actually a bit surprised that I won it, even hough my final bid would have been 950 EUR. At least in my eyes, it's worth more 😊 Thanks for leaving this one to me! 😄
Let's hope that it arrives well and I'm very curious what it will look like in hand.

I must correct myself, by the way. It's broken not in 3 but in 4 parts. And you can see a bit of the glue where the lines cross:

image.jpeg.b03dfc982e76c55c5f7ec9e2faa6a8f6.jpeg

I would consider putting this coin in a coin capsule with some foam inside in order to give it some protection. I like the Lighthouse Quadrum mini capsules, they cost less than 1 EUR per piece. I would estimate that this coin probably has a diameter of 17-18mm. It's still a beautiful coin - in a coin capsule you could handle it without fear if the foam fits well 😊

Very attractive portrait of Nero. I love the coins minted in Lugdunum.
