Roman Collector Posted January 27 · Patron Share Posted January 27 A couple of weeks ago, Frank sent out an e-mail informing his customers of his bargain coins fixed price list. I knew I had to order quickly because the coins are priced to MOVE! And move, they did. Even though I replied to Frank within 20 minutes, one of the three coins I was interested in had already sold. I was, however, able to pick up these two coins for the grand total of USD 31.42!! That's including postage and PayPal fees. Sure, the coins aren't exactly FDC, but for less than $16 each, I'm not complaining. Did any of you buy any from his list? Let's see them!! Of course, feel free to post anything you feel is relevant! Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted January 28 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted January 28 Nice pick ups. I got a similar cheap AE sestertius (Viminacium, Moesia) of Herennia Estruscilla for $10 from Frank. It's nice to know you can get a chunky ancient coin for less than a burger at the local eatery. 13
Furryfrog02 Posted January 29 · Supporter Share Posted January 29 (edited) I managed to get 8 from Frank's list. I had requested 9 so I am not complaining at all. The one that someone beat me out on was the Aureolus. A bit bummed on that one since I have been looking for quite some time for one. Oh well, I will find one some day... Here are the coins I did get: Magnesia ad Maeandrum, Ionia, 2nd-1st C. BC. Head of Artemis right, wearing stephane, bow and quiver behind head / MAΓNETΩN KΡATINOΣ EYKΛHΣ, Nike walking right, holding wreath and palm branch. SNG von Aulock 2044; BMC 46; SNG Cop 853; Lindgren III 373; SNG Tuebingen 2957. Mark Antony AR Legionary Denarius. 32-31 BC. ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian Galley right, sceptre tied with fillet on prow. / LEG XII ANTIQVAE above legionary eagle between standards. Cr 544/9, Syd 1231; Sear 1480. Nero AE20 Semis of Antioch, Syria. IM NER CLAV CAESAR, laureate head right / SC within circle, laurel wreath around. SNG Cop 161, Wruck 51. Antoninus Pius Æ as. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XII Laureate head right / MVNIFICENTA AVG Elephant standing right, COS IIII S C in ex. Cohen 565. Julia Domna, AE23 of Stobi, Macedonia. IVLIA AVGVSTA, draped bust right / MVNICI STOBEN, Nike walking left, holding wreath and palm. Varbanov 3901. Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right / VICTORIA AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm, star in exergue. Asian mint. RIC 663, Cohen 1094. This was listed as Valerian II yet it is clearly Saloninus. I'm happy with it since I didn't have either brother. Saloninus, AE Antoninianus. Antioch or Samosata mint, AD 258-260. 22mm, 4.42 g. SALON VALERIANVS NOB CAES, radiate, draped bust right / SPES PVBLICA, Saloninus standing right, holding spear and receiving flower from Spes, standing left, raising hem of robe. RIC V-1, 36; Cohen 95; Sear 10775. This one isn't beautiful, but I have been trying to get a portrait of Vabalathus for awhile so I will use it as a place holder for now. Aurelian and Vabalathus, AE20 potin Tetradrachm of Alexandria, Egypt. 270 to 275 AD. Dated Year 5. A K Λ ΔOM AYΡHΛIANOC CEB, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust of Aurelian right / YABAΛΛAΘOC AΘHNOV AVTCΡΩ, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust of Vabalathus right. I'm glad it went to a good home. He definitely has a good home 🙂 Elephants are FF3's favorite animal so it will go into his collection when he gets a bit older. Looking forward to seeing what you got! 2
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted January 29 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted January 29 Nice haul @Furryfrog02 - some very interesting pieces in there and the price was probably right. I think I paid $60 for this Antony denarius. Kind of worn as you can see...I mean you can tell it's a denarius of Antony but that's about it. But imagine the stories a coin so worn could tell, who carried it - soldier, sailor, tailor, tinker, spy - or merchant or whomever. In contrast FDC coins by their nature have quiet, almost uncirculated histories!
Furryfrog02 Posted January 29 · Supporter Share Posted January 29 Exactly @Ancient Coin Hunter! The Antony denarius was $18.75, the most expensive of the lot. But well worth it. You can make out the Legio if you have it at the right angle. It has good honest wear and I love thinking about those that held it and the history it has seen.
