Al Kowsky Posted August 26, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 26, 2022 The Historical Scholar Collection brought out the "high rollers" yesterday. There was nothing in the auction I could afford, nevertheless, it was a treat seeing so much interesting & rare material on the auction block ☺️. Pictured below are some of the coins that caught my attention with prices realized 🤓. $28,800.00 This is one of the highly prized "Crucifixion Shekels. $3120.00 I like my example better than this coin 🤔. $3,600.00 My Koson stater is better than this one 😜. 11

More examples from the auction. $24,000.00 Great portrait of Caesar on this coin. $228,000.00 😮! $38,400.00 That's a lot of money for a mutilated aureus 😏. $26,400.00 😮! That's a hefty price for a AE3 Constantine I 🤩. 8
AncientJoe Posted August 26, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 26, 2022 The Caligula is one of the most ridiculous auction prices I've seen in a long time. I hope it won't end up being repaired and returned to the market. I was outbid on everything; certainly an illogical sale in many places! 3

A Caesar Elefant Denarius...?!? 🤯 I can actually imagine a Caesar elephant worth that kind of money or more. The problem I have is that the example in question is badly flawed, lacking even a complete name.

What an poorly executed elephant, notice its unusual proportions and look at the tentative carving in head, trunk and ears, details rendered with blobs.

No - I don't want to badmouth the coin. It is certainly the most beautiful Domitian denarius of this type that I have seen! It really is a superb, super great coin! I would consider myself lucky to have such a specimen in my collection. But over 4,000 USD? https://www.biddr.com/auctions/stacksbowers/browse?a=2812&l=3130731

But would you pay what I consider an exorbitant price? Such beautiful coins have their price. Not at all. But I personally find over 4,000 exorbitant. But of course it's not my money. And I can only speak for myself.

I have acquired some coins with a star* designation that sold for bargain prices, but not many. As some collectors & dealers have reported, Japanese & Chinese collectors love star* coins 😍 & will pay huge premiums for them.
