  1. @akeady You have an amazing collection! That Trajan bridge sestertius in particular caught my eye. I'd love to get one someday but they are not cheap!
  2. I've been slowly but steadily working on attributing and labeling some more LRB coins to put up for sale. 😉
  3. Welcome @gransuricata ! I can't contribute anything helpful about your coin, but if you are truly interested in the hobby of ancient coin collecting, stick around! There's a lot to learn here and most are eager to share their knowledge with newcomers. For others...I really hope that this doesn't become the normal way we greet newcomers. Even if they do rub you the wrong way, extending a little grace won't hurt anyone, and if they do turn out to be a troll, at least you will have the satisfaction of not having been baited into a heated exchange. Just my two cents' worth.
  4. Well I rolled the dice...and this is what I got (no joke!): So...in keeping with the die roll, here's a random coin for you:
  5. @Phil Davis That makes sense. I bought my AK Collection coin directly from Dr Dieterle. Thanks for sharing that!
  6. Great photography! I really like some of those quarter-facing shots (where you can see some of the edge.) It's a cool perspective that gives depth to an otherwise 2-dimensional object.
  7. Thanks! I hoped there'd be more info about AK out there, since I've seen coins from his collection fairly frequently. But maybe not! Seems like most collectors like to remain in the shadows. 🤔
  8. I've heard and seen numerous references to the "A.K. Collection", but I have not been able to find out anything about it - who A.K. was/is, the size and scope of his collection, or any sort of published catalog. I own an ex-A.K. Collection coin myself, and I'm curious to know more about the former owner of my coin! Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  9. I'm more frightened of that demon boar than any of the bulls posted so far! 😧 Edit - apologies for the double post. I was trying to quote the picture too and somehow messed up.
  10. @Steve I'm more frightened of that demon boar than any of the bulls so far! 😧
  11. That's beautiful! Well worth the wait!
  12. Just got done photographing and writing descriptions for a new batch of coins. I'm on a roll tonight! A couple of the "Good Emperors": Another Chinese coin (my oldest yet!): And another interesting one I bought for the history - specifically, for the connection to New Testament characters and events - Aretas IV was the father-in-law of Herod Antipas, and Herod's divorcing Aretas's daughter in order to marry his brother Philip's wife Herodias ultimately led to John the Baptist being beheaded (Matthew 14:3-12):
  13. Great coin from one of my favorite VCoin dealers! That is a really nice one, and if I remember right, it was a good price. Congrats! Mind if I add my ex-Jorn Klepper Nero sestertius? 😉
  14. Not having enough money to buy all the coins I want. 😜
  15. I guess number one would be historical significance, closely followed by eye appeal. I don't specialize in any particular period of history, or any particular civilization. I enjoy ancients of all kinds. If a coin has an interesting story, background, or other historical significance I'll at least be interested. It also has to be reasonably visually attractive. "Reasonably" means taking into account the coin's rarity and typical expense, as with my recent Otho denarius. Even though it's in quite poor shape, I consider it reasonably attractive because a nicer one is so much more expensive. This brings in the third, or maybe I should say the overarching consideration, which is price. Obviously it has to fit within my budget or I won't buy it, no matter how appealing it may be.
  16. Bought for a few reasons: the crisp reverse strike, the beautiful toning, and the provenance to the BCD collection.
  17. This one means business!

    My first Otho!

Once again you steal the show! 😉 That is beauty!

    My first Otho!

You are probably right; they don't appear to put a lot of effort into their listings. I've purchased a few coins from them that have been mis-labelled. That's partly why I was interested in hearing other's thoughts on the coin, especially since Otho types are more often counterfeited than some. I certainly don't want a fake! To my admittedly inexperienced eyes it appears legitimate enough. I guess sometimes honest wear is a good thing? 🙂
  20. I have a Galba denarius, and Vitellius isn't too hard to get. But Otho seems to be the most expensive of the A.D. 69 emperors. I wanted to get an Otho coin eventually, but I wasn't sure when I'd ever buy one since they seem to start at around $500, and I've only spent that much money on a single coin twice. Most of my collection is sub-$300. Also for $500 there are a lot of other coins I'd rather have! When I saw this rather poor Otho denarius in the recent Savoca auction, I thought just maybe this could be an affordable Otho for my collection. I placed a bid, and ended up winning! Yes, it's very worn and corroded, but hey this guy isn't complaining...not only is Otho's portrait distinctly recognizable, but there is also left visible his name (barely). The reverse I don't care as much about, which is good since it's even worse; but even so there is still plenty of detail left to be able to identify the type. Overall I am stoked that I was able to fill this difficult and expensive spot at what I consider a very reasonable price! Somewhat unexpectedly, too, since I wasn't sure I would win with my bid. What do you think of the coin? It's a bit lightweight, but I figure that's from the wear and the corrosion (it's a fairly thin flan too). I don't think it's a fouree or anything. (And I'm sure Savoca would have caught it if it was.) Oh, and please post up your Otho coins! 🙂
  21. Looks pretty nice to me! 🙂
  22. That is a particularly fine portrait style! I like it!
