quant.geek Posted August 4, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 4, 2022 (edited) The style of this particular hyperpyron peaked my interest for a very long time, but these coins were always difficult to get in good condition. While the figures are somewhat flat (typical with this coin), it has an almost complete legend, which is extremely difficult to get. The wait definitely paid off... seth77 Posted August 4, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 4, 2022 I wanted to post a Byzantine topic last night but ended up falling asleep before I could make up my mind what about. Very nice hyper, I would settle with is copper counterpart.
quant.geek Posted August 4, 2022 · Member Author Share Posted August 4, 2022 The copper version of that particular hyperpyron was scratched off the list twice a while ago 🙂. They don't come up for sale that often and thus are more scarce than the gold: Byzantine Empire: Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1295) Æ Trachy, Constantinople (Sear 2334; DOC V.563-66; LPC 40; PCPC 101)

Benefactor robinjojo Posted August 4, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted August 4, 2022 (edited) That's a super nice and rare hyperpyron! Congratulations! My only Byzantine hyperpyron with the Virgin Orans on the obverse is the far more common one of Andronicus and II Michael IX (1303-1320). From Roma E-Sale 53, lot 1037. 3.95 grams Edited August 4, 2022 by robinjojo
Bailathacl Posted August 4, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 4, 2022 My recurring challenge is that every time I scratch a coin off of my want list, I tend to add 3 or 3 coins to that want list. Good times!

Yours has the more abbreviated legend with both Christ and the emperor's face visible!
