expat Posted April 2 · Supporter Share Posted April 2 I rarely consider coinage of the 4th Century. It is not particularly high on my list of interests. However, after seeing some wonderful coins posted on this forum, a realisation that a campgate would be nice to see and hold in my collection. As they are plentiful and cheap, I picked one up for 8 Euros all in. I decided a CAESS reverse was preferential for me instead of AUGG. Constantine II AE follis. 337-340 AD. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate head right / PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, campgate with no doors, two turrets and star above. Mintmark: Epsilon SIS double crescent. Siscia 2.92 g, 19.2mm RIC VII 216 Feel free to post your CAESS reverses, or any campgates
ambr0zie Posted April 2 · Member Share Posted April 2 Good coin, especially the reverse. I have 2 of this type, both from Heraclea and both from Constantine II - first, from my very first lot 20,1 mm, 2,86 g. Constantine II, Caesar under Constantine I. Ӕ follis. Heraclea. 329-330. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right / PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS, campgate, eight layers, two turrets, star above, no door. Star in left field.Mintmark SMHA. RIC VII Heraclea 107. Second was a coin I found really beautiful, with a flan crack that did the trick because I think, without it, the price would have been too much for what I wanted to pay. 20 mm, 3,13 g. Constantine II, Caesar under Constantine I. Ӕ follis. Heraclea. 317 AD. D N FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB C, bust of Constantine II, laureate, draped, left, holding sceptre in right hand and mappa in left hand / PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS, camp gate with three turrets, without doors, with six stone layers. MintMark: -/-//MHT∈ RIC VII Heraclea 20.

mcwyler Posted April 2 · Member Share Posted April 2 (edited) Campgates? Now you're talking! I'll have to stop there because I could literally post another hundred and I don't want to make this thread unreadable. But yes, I like a good campgate! Don't mind the bad ones come to that.. O-Towner Posted April 4 · Member Share Posted April 4 (edited) I thought I'd add two more campgates to this thread (you had to start me on these types ... which certainly are my favorites). These are not in great shape but they're without doubt two of the scarcest late Roman type Ae gates. It's thought that these were issued by Valentinian II and Theodosius I around 384 - 389 AD to commemorate some unknown occasion. 1. Valentinian II (RIC IX 59a.2) Obv; D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG; Diademed and mantled bust left holding mappa and short scepter Rev: GLORIA REIPVBLICE; Campgate with Staurogram above and A to left; TES in exergue 2. Theodosius I with identical obverse and reverse designs (Obv: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG) : Ref: RIC IX 59b.1 Edited April 4 by O-Towner
