Deinomenid Posted February 16 · Supporter Share Posted February 16 There's a large database of Greek overstrikes that I thought would be helpful to mention to those interested but possibly unaware of it - I was until it was mentioned to me after an ANS presentation that referenced it. https://silver.knowledge.wiki/Greek_Overstrikes_Database It is fairly easy to use and often shows clear undertypes, and looks useful for training the eye for the less obvious ones. The map shows all inputted and while some areas such as Crete and Cyprus have a huge number other large areas might be more a reflection of the sheer volume of output rather than percentage of overstrikes. Still... Once you've selected a city it will show you all uploaded coins like this - and then you can drill down to the coins after hovering over the spiral icons. Agrigentum (AE Zeus/eagles) over Syracuse (Agathocles) (Artemis/thunderbolt) (CNG, EA 199, Nov. 2008, 18) or Gela (tetradrachm biga/man-faced bull) over Catana (man-faced-bull/Nike) (New York Sign., 3021, Jan. 2013, 21470) Not all the "dots" have clear links or explanations, but it's something. It's also filterable by type, weight, issuer etc, and has links to a lot of related literature. Please feel free to post any overstrikes/anything related- I believe they'd like them sent there too. Though how anyone could have overstruck those amazing Catana coins is beyond me! 10

Also good with Chrome. Outside my wheelhouse though I'm sorry. It's linked through that silver project site too - the one that tried to isolate silver ore sources more precisely, funded by the EU but that ran into a bit of a brick wall when the world's curators said no to drilling or scraping their coins. http://geology.ens-lyon.fr/silver/ Can't locate the direct link though so here are some other links in just in case it helps. https://silver.knowledge.wiki/Greek_Overstrikes https://silver.knowledge.wiki/Greek_Overstrikes_Literature https://silver.knowledge.wiki/Special:BrowseData/Die_Study

Ed Snible Posted February 17 · Member Share Posted February 17 The site is working for me now. I went to the Apollonia Pontika page, https://silver.knowledge.wiki/Apollonia_Pontica , and saw two overstruck coins with unknown undertypes. I suspect I know the undertypes, but the site provides no way for the public to comment on the coins.
Broucheion Posted February 17 · Member Share Posted February 17 (edited) Hi All, After hearing the talk, I tried to add my overstikes, some of which were posted to CT a while back. See https://www.cointalk.com/threads/follow-the-coin-theme-game-ancient-edition-post-‘em-if-you-got-‘em.300099/page-291#post-4606075 as just one example from my collection. That one is noted in CPE volume 1. That's when I too noticed there is no way to contact the database owners to add to the body of knowledge. - Broucheion Edited February 17 by Broucheion
NewStyleKing Posted February 17 · Member Share Posted February 17 Under/overstrikes have figured large in the contentious but bloody interesting story of the chronology of the Athens NewStyles, mainly by leading it astray! There once was a Aesillas overstruck on a NewStyle of Dhmeas/Kallikratidhs issue featuring Isis as symbol. Now Margaret Thompson did not believe in NewStyles issued after L.Cornelius "Lucky" Sulla inspected the walls around Piraeus and Athens and found they breached planning permissions and knocked them down! The Aesillas coinage was thought by her to be minted between 93 and 88 BC (NSSCA) and the Isiac NewStyle coin 107/6 BC which gives time for the overstriking to occur and supports her contention that post Sullan NewStyles didn't happen. Here was proof...incontrovertible! But many thought that NewStyles did re-occur after Sulla knocked on the door in March 87 BC and the NewStyle coin should be dated to c 75BC. Whilst nothing conclusive one way or the other it seemed there was something not quite right. Eventually Bauslaugh examined the Aesillas coinage and concluded it was an intermittent coinage minted about 95 BC to c 70/65 BC which nowadays shows that the modern general dating of the NewStyles should be the basis for dating the mixed hoards they appear in...... Recently, The early catalogue NewStyles in the Gazintep Hoard and Demetrios l Hoard satisfy the Seleucid dated coins of the Low Chronology and according to Meadows the internal NewStyle chronology is satisfied. Meanwhile, a Thrakon type, similar to Thasos was overstruck on a NewStyle of symbol Griffin which on the Low chronology is 88/7 BC. DeCallatay says this re-dates the Thrakon series some 20 years earlier than thought and has nothing to do with the 1st Mithradatic war. I only found one of my "common" overstrikes (1 - Mysia, Kyzikos, Prow to right struck over Kore Soteira head right). It doesn't contain other widely known overstrikes like the 2 - Macedonia shield - Kassander, or 3 - Mysia, Kyzikos - corn wreath struck over head of Kore, or 4 - Macedon, Philippi - tripod struck over bow and club.
