CPK Posted January 1 · Supporter Share Posted January 1 I recently got this coin in a small group lot. As you can see, the surface has a somewhat uniform "bumpiness" which seems a little unusual. Is this a cause for concern? There's no other indication of inauthenticity that I can see - but I would rather be safe than sorry! What is your judgment? Genuine or fake? Weight is 3.81 grams. Thanks for your input!
Al Kowsky Posted January 1 · Member Share Posted January 1 I think the coin is legit, just a victim of corrosion 🤔. 3
Ryro Posted January 1 · Supporter Share Posted January 1 I agree. I've seen more than a few Gordy 3s with corrosion issues, possibly due to low silver content(?), and think it's genuine.
Marsyas Mike Posted January 1 · Member Share Posted January 1 Looks okay to me too. I think the low-grade silver/alloy can sometimes experience a leaching process that leaves them a bit pock-marked and light weight.
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted January 1 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted January 1 Antioch mint which might explain a slightly different metallic content than Rome. RIC 213 RSC 167 Gordian III AR Antoninianus. Antioch Mint. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right / ORIENS AVG, Sol standing left, holding globe and raising right hand. I believe it to be authentic 2
ambr0zie Posted January 1 · Member Share Posted January 1 I think it's just corrosion. One of my favorite Gallienus (of course I know it's a different emperor) has the same type of mild corrosion

Roman Collector Posted January 2 · Patron Share Posted January 2 The silver quality on some of those Gordys is so bad that under many circumstances it leaches out of the coin, revealing a rough, granular surface. Here's an ugly Gordy.
