Tejas Posted November 24, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 24, 2023 This coin is currently on sale by a reputable auction house. Despite the patina and signs of wear, I think the coin is a modern fake. I have seen this type before. Curiously, the emperor on the reverse is wearing a toga, instead of military armour.
hotwheelsearl Posted November 24, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 24, 2023 Huh, what strikes you as fake on this? I don't like the patina myself, it looks a little too "applied"
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted November 24, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted November 24, 2023 Knowing the weight and size of the coin would be helpful. To me it looks like an AE1. Assuming the patina was the only alteration to the coin, I would suspect it is a doctored authentic coin.
seth77 Posted November 24, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 24, 2023 I dont like the reverse at all. It reminds me of a weird fake from a couple of years that had this type of reverse with the emperor in toga coupled with an obverse of Diocletian (!)
Benefactor Victor_Clark Posted November 24, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted November 24, 2023 Yes, it is a fake. Here's my example-- 4 3

Heliodromus Posted November 24, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 24, 2023 I call these the "mix 'n match" fakes since there are a bunch of obverses and reverses that get combined together with little care to plausibility! 7
