Benefactor KenDorney Posted October 25, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted October 25, 2023 This was posted on Reddit (by someone else) and I wanted to get opinions here. These coins both look genuine as can be and are struck from different die pairs. What are the chances of getting two unique coins that should have unique characteristics but both have the exact flan shape? The chances seem to be astronomical, but it is possible. Any thoughts? 5
JayAg47 Posted October 25, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) Since they were minted by the same moneyer, I think they made the blanks en mass using the same 'cookie cutter' and used them for different dies. Salomons Cat Posted October 25, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 25, 2023 The flan shape seems very similar to me, but not identical. I have the impression that these are probably genuine coins; judging only from the photos… 🤔 2
maridvnvm Posted October 25, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 25, 2023 Looking through ACsearch at the type there seem to be MANY examples with a similar flan shape.
Romismatist Posted October 25, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 25, 2023 I would second that the flan shapes are close but not identical. They both look like genuine coins to me and are neither obverse nor reverse die matches. Nice coins! 1

Roman Collector Posted October 27, 2023 · Patron Share Posted October 27, 2023 Struck by different mint workers, and therefore with different die pairs, using similarly prepared planchets from a big pile of them in the mint.
