Ryro Posted April 9, 2023 · Supporter Share Posted April 9, 2023 Just won a strange and oddly attractive hot mess of a Nero today. The seller, who has identified some rare and unique coins perfectly in the past, lists it as "canceled during ancient times". MACEDON THESSALONICA Nero Bronze. 54-68 A.D. 5,12 g // 17 mm Obv: ΝƐΡWΝ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ; bare head of Nero, l. Rev: ΘƐϹϹΑΛΟΝΙΚΗ; Nike on globe, l. RPC I, 1595. VF Coin cancelled during ancient times I'm not sold on it being "canceled". If the meaning is to damn the coin then I'm pretty sure the hole would be in Nero's face, ala my coin of his equally insane (according to the senate, whom had every reason to write negatively about them) uncle Caligula: Gaius (Caligula). AD 37-41. Æ Sestertius (33.5mm, 23.85 g, 7h). Rome mint. Struck AD 37-38. Laureate head left / Gaius' three sisters standing facing: Agrippina (as Securitas) leaning on column, holding cornucopia, and placing hand on Drusilla (as Concordia), holding patera and cornucopia; on right, Julia (as Fortuna) holding rudder and cornucopia. RIC I 33. Reddish-brown and light green patina, portrait defaced in antiquity. Fine. And if by canceled they don't mean damnatio, then what? It looks more to me as a poorly prepared flan with a big air bubble or something of that nature. I've seen plenty of scoops on RR silver to presumably lighten the weight. Not so much on provincial bronzes. Ice cream scoop for metal heads maybe? Of course the reverse reminds us all of the assorted types of MSCs that floated around at this time. I might add without an identifying ruler: Anyone else have any weird flan issues, "canceled" coins, MSCs, provincial Nero or whatever cancels some crazy SOB! 17

Curtisimo Posted April 10, 2023 · Supporter Share Posted April 10, 2023 Nice coins Ryan. On this coin it looks to me like Septimius Severus is missing something rather important… 7
Harry G Posted April 10, 2023 · Member Share Posted April 10, 2023 Fantastic piece! Here's my only possible "Damnatio Memoriae" coin (more likely, it's just graffiti though): Gallienus - MARTI PACIFERO (Rome) 6

It looks like it was done when the metal was soft. The obverse shows no sign of damage, which it would do if someone gave the reverse a whack like that. 1

And was taken aback that such a knowledgeable auction house would have it listed as "canceled"?! Possibly why I won it for so cheap (under 10€), hehe. Error coins are always popular. And such a unique one being listed as such?? Big goof. I'll be excited to see it in hand.

Roman Collector Posted April 11, 2023 · Patron Share Posted April 11, 2023 Man, that's the biggest flan flaw I've ever seen, @Ryro!! That's worth acquiring as a curio alone! F-R-E-A-K-Y! Here are a few in my collection with flan flaws. I USED TO think they were impressive. 4
