ID Help - Myster 2-headed Flavian(?) AE23
hotwheelsearl replied to hotwheelsearl's topic in Roman Empire
Thanks. First one is Vespasian, RPC 2459! -
I love how the Tyche portrait basically looks like Titus.

I have two Troa'n coins; This is the more traditioinal style with the COL AVG reverse. Horse is rather nice. Valerian's face is all bashed in, sort of like in real life, I would imagine. This is an interesting coin of Caracalla with a weird portrait. The reverse isn't that Civic style.

ID Help - Myster 2-headed Flavian(?) AE23
hotwheelsearl replied to hotwheelsearl's topic in Roman Empire
I have another as well. I don't think its the same type, but they do have a similar look. This is also 23mm. -
I believe this is a Flavian coin of some sort, based on what's left of the obverse (or at least, I think that's the obverse). The presumed reverse has some Greek letters, which I can't quite make out. The portrait here is of a draped male with a rather extravagantly large laureate crown. This measures about 23mm in diameter.

I do believe this is Tiberius II, Sear 432! When I saw the picture in the lot, it was reverse side up so I saw the XXX and got excited. The obverse is going to end up pretty much obliterated, but hey, at least the interesting part of the coin is still intact.

I always thought the "odd" denominated follis fractions were neat - 12, 16, 30. They tend to be harder to find and more expensive than I want to spend. I found this in a lot for like $7 per coin. This unfortunately suffers from a tons of bronze disease, mixed in with stable malachite deposits. I could probably dunk this in sodium hydroxide and strip it down, but I kind of like malachite. Currently trying to perform some life-saving surgery with distilled water. Please pray for us!

I tried to take a pic to better show what looks like a helmeted bust. Honest, the Roma half unit you posted looks pretty dang close to being the prize.
-
Close, but not quite. Mine is just 11mm, and the animal figure is not as dynamic as most centaurs, it is pretty statically standing, sort of like a Gazelle or Antelope on Gallienus zoo coins. The obverse is most definitely a bust right. Either helmeted, or maybe a loose-haired Dionysos.
-
I rotate the obverse every which way, and the closest I can really seem to get is a bust right, helmeted. I was thinking a panther myself for the rev, but this one's tough. BTW this one is 11mm.

I thought it looked like it had an applied patina

ID Help - Tiny AE16 with eagle reverse
hotwheelsearl replied to hotwheelsearl's topic in ID Help & Authentication
Amazing, you found it! Thank you so much! -
I don't have a scale, but this probably weighs about 1g, and 16mm. The eagle reminds me of Claudius II's consecratio issues, but this is obviously a provincial coin. I think I see a lambda on the obverse, which also points to Claudius II, but I just can't figure it out.

I've noticed that on Chinese cash coins you often get all sorts of rather beautiful blue and green encrustations, usually azurite and malachite, or some other copper-ish compounds. For some reason, this is much less common on Roman coins, and I almost never seen Romans with more than a few crystals. I came upon this little guy of Constantine II that has nearly full azuritic coverage, with a crescent of malachite on the reverse. Wow! For comparison, here are two cash coins that are just loaded with green and blue: Here's a few Alexandrian tets with green and blue, both with rather well-defined crystals of azurite.

Yup, the third one sure has an A above prow. Thanks!!
-
I know very little about Greek IDs. There's usually no text to help out too much. This one appears to have a standing creature of some sort on the rev. Here we have a diademed male head on the obv. Rev has a prow right, with "BA" on top, which mean little to me. This one appears to have Tyche right on the obv, and a prow left on the rev.
