I too have a canadian olympic set (that I have no picture of) sent by my Secret Santa some years ago, together with an ancient. Any idea who it was @Steve ? 😄 Q
  17. Nice display ! 40 years ago I was quite proud of my newbie's collection and would show it off everytime I was given the opportunity (TBH I would create the opportunity myself 😇 ). Of course people were kind and polite enough to look at them and try very hard to show some interest...or pretend. I'm now wise enough to save people the trouble. For now I will only show some coins on request, which is very rare, and I have selected a few items that might be of some interest to someone inexperienced. The first thing is to have something people will already know, or at least have heard of. Reason why I've chosen 40 french coins (I live in France) from early royals until pre-euro. If, and only if, they are enthusiastic and want more, I'm show the Gran' slam. Q

  22. Cool idea for a thread I don't have the coin anymore. I bought it for its beautiful portrait (to my eyes at least), and finally let it go to a buddy who collects consecration coinage and wanted it desperately Diva Faustina II, Denarius - Rome mint, after AD 176 DIVA AVG FAVSTINA, Veiled and draped bust right CONSECRATIO, funeral pyre 3.26 gr, 18 mm Ref : Cohen # 77, RIC # 747, RCV # 5218 Q
  23. I've seen years ago, but couldn't find it anywhere now, a gold dental prothesis made of melted roman aurei. The guy went to the dentist with enough aurei for the whole thing. The dentist couldn't refuse, he said, but took pictures of the coins to remember which is which (aureus/tooth). Sounds crazy, I would have kept the aurei and melted down a gold bar instead I guess. Q
  24. In the past I've made and published an attempt to a classification of Plautilla's denarii based on hairstyle. Here's a virtual tray of what I found back then Q
