  1. Here’s a link the the PLOS One journal article: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0274285 …and below are the results of the metallurgical study: I wouldn’t be too surprised if the coins were ancient. They are likely, at best, ancient imitations and, at worst, more modern inventions. I just don’t believe that he prove that the usurper lived or minted coins.
  2. I have prettier Gallienus coins… but I’ve always found this one interesting. It seems to straddle eras… the portrait style is in between the more realistic earlier portrait styles and the later, abstract and simplified style of Gallienus’ late reign. The silvering, an early example of what’s to come, tries to convey that the state is strong and money good, but gives away the truth in the base metal bronze showing through. One side of the coin shows a round flan with room for the legends, while the other side is ragged and sharpe, cutting off the legends. It’s a prefect 2 gram visual, showing the decline of Rome mid-third century.
  3. That’s a really fun book and can be found on Amazon very cheaply. I’d recommend it to anyone that likes architectural coins. Also a really cool OP coin. I really like it and would love to capture one! Here’s my only Trajan temple coin… a different temple! Trajan Alexandria. Year 15, 111-112 AD. AYT TΡAIAN CEB ΓEΡM ΔAKIK, laureate bust right, with aegis. Sarapis standing left, holding sceptre within distyle temple, stele at his feet. Date LI-E across fields. Köln 590; Milne 670; Emmett 581.
  4. Nice coin! I bought this one for $11, couldn’t say no to that price. The silver is crystallized and broke again on the way to me… a little glue and 🤷🏻‍♂️. Not a stunner but a piece of history for the price of a lunch. The pieces remaining have some good detail too!
  5. Great coins! I love when I get the chance to post these later ones.
  6. Yeah, yours is cropped a bit closer to the legend so a that size is not too small for the type and weight is what you’d expect. I’m pretty sure it’s a Constantius II SPES REIPVBLICAE… if it was the other option for this coin type (Julian), there would be no diadem.
  7. What’s the size and weight? That would narrow down the possibilities. It does look like Constantius II. If it’s small 17-16mm, it could be a SPES REIPVBLICAE reverse from the late 350s. Here’s one of mine:
  8. That’s a beautiful OP coin! All of the others after are great as well. Here’s my favorite Volusian, as Augustus. The picture shows contrast well but not the luster of the surfaces. It’s nearly perfect in hand and was also lost in the mail for several months! Volusian AR Antoninianus. IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG, radiate, draped bust right/ PAX AVGG, Pax standing left, holding branch and sceptre. RIC 179; RSC 70; Sear 9758.
  9. Sure thing, bring them on! Try to post in the appropriate category for the most views.
  10. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR BEST OF TYPE WINNER FOR THE CONSTANTIUS II ALEXANDRIA RIC VIII 72 BATTLE @maridvnvm! A great win for a great coin. Amazing details, high relief, a warm brown tone, your coin is a great example of the type! Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈! Thank you again to all of the other entrants and posters, especially @maridvnvm, @Broucheion and @Tejas for their terrific examples of the type!
  11. Thanks for the feedback @Curtisimo! Yeah, I wish there was an image feature for poll questions. But yes, adding them to the OP would be a nice thing to try next time around. Thanks! As for the competition in general, I think it was fun. I don’t view these as solely a competition but a twist that adds a little fun to pile on posts. I think it’s fun to see many examples of one type and see what discussion can result. Ancient coin collectors seem to be a bit wary of best of type completions. And I get that and feel it too, modern coin collectors put so much importance on grading, ranking and best of type designations that it puts us ancient coin buffs off a bit. I’d like the keep the vibe of these posts light and fun and “winning” fairly meaningless… as all of these coins are unique pieces of history and none are perfect. Anyway, my goal with picking a specific version of a common type was to showcase a coin that many have in their collections but limit it a bit so I didn’t have 50 entrants. I think it worked well. I was hoping for 5 coins, so pretty much hit the goal. Thanks all who viewed, posted and entered the competition. The poll closes in a few minutes.
  12. Just a bump once on this one as it’s the last day to vote! Voting will close this evening at 11:59 pm US Central time. Thanks to everyone for participating! Let your voice be heard, vote now!
  13. FINAL ENTRANTS AND VOTING REFERENCE POST Note: This "Battle" is for fun, it's not serious and the highest grade coin doesn't always win. Thank you to all who posted and participated. Please choose your favorite coin. Try to not let the photography influence your choice. The “Best” coin can be the most interesting, beautiful or highest grade or a mix... you decide! The poll is at the top of the first page. I’ll leave voting open until 11:59 pm Central (US) time 10/11/22. After, we will have a champion until a challenger arises! If a challenger does arise, I'd suggest a new "BOT Challenge" post referencing and linking this one, including pictures of the previous final coins. It is the challenger's responsibility to "host" the new competition or challenge. Feel free to continue discussing what makes each coin great! Vote now! 🗳 (A further note... I think these BOT Battle posts could be fun and include a lot of good natured banter and discussion over interesting differences in types. Feel free to add to the topic here if you have ideas or suggestions on how these types of posts could be improved. Thank you!) Coin 1 Below Coin 2 Below Coin 3 Below Coin 4 Below Coin 5 - I just noticed that COIN 5 withdrew from the competition.
  14. Take a picture and post it! We can give you the details. My first coin was a later Constantius II fallen horseman from Siscia!
  15. Last call on Constantius II Alexandria RIC VIII 72 entries into the Best of Type Battle! I’ll be posting the poll question for voting this evening after my monsters… I mean kids… go to bed. Likely around 10:30pm central (US). I know there are a lot more of these out there! @Randygeki where ya at?!
  16. A summary of eligible Constantius II Alexandria RIC VIII 72 coins to this point in order of posting: (Notes: A couple posters have added several other excellent examples to further the fun! but have identified the coins above as their one entry. Others have added coins of other mints to show off the the great variation between mints. While not eligible for this battle, I appreciate them being added here! Keep the coins and discussion coming! Thanks!)
  17. Great coins @dougsmit! I’m always envious of your Amiens and Trier FH, especially the Gallus coins. I have two Constantius II FHs from Amiens but NO FH coins at all from Trier. Two of my most disappointing eBay loss sleeper coins were poorly photographed fallen horseman… one was a beautiful Trier CII and the other a Magnentius(!). Both looked to be under the radar and had little interest. At the last second, I dumped in huge bids to cut off others with the same idea… and of course I was not the only bidder with the same idea and lost to someone bidding to out bid the bidder thinking he’s outbidding last second bidders (whew)! Ugh. Next time, no mercy! Those are beauties @bcuda and @akeady! I love when you can find fallen horseman that still show silvering. Thanks for showing them. Showcasing coins of other mints along these Alexandrian coins gives a good opportunity to appreciate the differing styles. When you see enough of these you can start to be pretty accurate at guessing mints and sometimes even the series (Ex. Amiens and Constantinople hairstyles have distinct characteristics!). I’m looking forward to a good battle/vote. Lots of nice Alexandrians in the ring… I think there’s going to be a diverse vote as each of these coins have strengths!
  18. A great run of coins! As for the portrait style on these, I’ve always really liked it. The portrait has always reminded me of (musician) Stephen Malkmus. Haha… 😂 The details and differences on these coins are endlessly fascinating to me. …here’s my slightly earlier “S” series coin… but from Antioch that, with the right eye, could look to have something like stirrups. @dougsmit Love your lineup there, and the discussion (I’m going to go check for stirrups on my coins tonight!) but you forgot to choose The One! …if you only have one coin to run anchor in a relay race… what number coin is it? Which gladiator are you sending to the battle?
  19. I picked Alexandria as (along with Antioch) they had the best artistry of the time (in my opinion!). Fallen horseman of Antioch would be a great battle too as there were some pretty coins minted there!
  20. That’s ok! this is a first run at this and we are all excited about our coins. I really like the detail on your horses head and the way you can still see the horse’s back leg over the shield. While not in the running for the type, thanks for sharing the great coin!
  21. One of the post types on FORVM that I always thought was fun but not all that popular there were the Best of Type competitions. These are friendly posts that feature coins of one specific type, inviting posters to add their example coins. At the end of a time period, say a week or so, there would be a vote to crown a champion coin. That winning coin reigns until there is a challenger. These competitions are supposed to be a fun way to see lots of coins of a type, discuss their differences!, and give one lucky owner temporary bragging rights. Anyway, I'd like to give one of these a try... these competitions are most fun if common types are chosen so many people can participate. So.. I've chosen a coin of mine which is certainly NOT best of type (as I know there are many better out there!) but a good starting point as many of us have one. Let's see who has the best Constantius II RIC VIII 72 from Alexandria! Choose your ONE best of the type to post! I also encourage anyone to jump in with commentary on what makes each pretty, special and interesting. For this first one, I'm thinking that I'll follow up in 5 days (Saturday) and try to add a poll with the user names of those who post a coin, then give another few days (3?) for voting. Constantius II - FEL TEMP REPARATIO - ALE Delta - Alexandria - RIC VIII 72
  22. Great new coins @Prieure de Sion! Below is my Gordian RIC 81. My obverse is really nice but my reverse is from a mushy strike and worn die. I wish my reverse was as nice as yours!
  23. Wow 🤩 @Prieure de Sion, those are some beautiful new coins! Congratulations! I’m particularly envious of the Balbinus and the Gordian from Antiochia, Pisidia. At 35mm and 24.5 grams, it must be fun to hold in-hand. Not from 238, but here are some other fun Gordian coins in my collection:
  24. Here’s a few good Valerians: …and a BAD Valerian. A Fake Alexandrian Tetradrachm, a reminder of these that pop up about once a year.
