Today Marks the 1st Day of the Dragon Year

Today marks the 1st day of the Dragon Year for 2024 ☺️. The Asian animal zodiac is composed of 12 different animals that are teamed with 5 different elements, this year's element is wood. Pictured below is a wood dish, 4 in. diameter, c. 1900, with a Chinese dragon carved in cinnabar lacquer from my collection. If website members have coins or art objects with dragons feel welcome to post them 😉.

Happy New Year!  There's a dragon on this 1 yen from Japan dated Meiji 16 (1883):

And dragons on these Chinese 20 cash coins from the first decade of the 20th century (I'm too lazy to figure out the exact dates right now):

How about a real dragon tooth?

spinosaurus4inch.jpg.30336a213b65f8b282234e61877d640c.jpg

4" Spinosaurus Tooth

spino.jpg.ad52278daaad6099881e1f41d2932971.jpg

Spinosaurus (meaning "spine lizard") is a genus of theropod dinosaur which lived in what is now North Africa, from the lower Albian to Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous period, about 106 to 93.5 million years ago. This genus was first known from Egyptian remains discovered in the 1910s and described by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer. These original remains were destroyed in World War II, but additional skull material has come to light in recent years. It is unclear whether one or two species are represented in the described fossils. The best known species is S. aegyptiacus from Egypt, although a potential second species, S. maroccanus, has been recovered from Morocco. Spinosaurus is often postulated as a piscivore, and work using oxygen isotope ratios in tooth enamel suggests that it was semiaquatic, living both on land and in water like a modern crocodilian.

Here's a late addition.  This small figurine is part of a group of jadeite figurines that appeared on eBay around 2004-05.  As far as I can determine they were produced in the 1990s.

That's a finely carved jadeite tortoise 🤩! In Chinese mythology it is believed when a tortoise becomes 1,000 years old it will turn into a dragon.
