Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted October 29, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted October 29, 2023 Definitely worth slabbing! 😉 2
Dafydd Posted October 29, 2023 · Supporter Share Posted October 29, 2023 Yes, the slabs will be the antiques of the future and can be collected by date. 1
ambr0zie Posted October 29, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2023 When seeing these extraordinary coins I remember the CT specialist who advised everybody to buy slabbed coins, because it's a great danger to buy raw forgeries. This is the way to go! Hope he buys all these, to have a complete collection. 4
JeandAcre Posted October 29, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2023 (edited) ...No, this Really defies comment. (...Well, okay:) To @Dafydd's point, bottom line is, are you collecting coins, or slabs? Edited October 29, 2023 by JeandAcre

ambr0zie Posted October 29, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2023 They are, of course, because they are slabbed! The expert who slabbed the Claudius Gothicus posthumous antoninianus was not sure (even masters show flaws) and he played it safe. But what a show stopper! And the future happy owner will have a slabbed Gothicus rather than wasting 2 euros on a similar quality raw coin and risking buying a forgery. 1

Maybe some philanthropist or idealist will buy them to crack them out…. 1 1
JeandAcre Posted October 29, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2023 No, @Dafydd, promise you, I got the irony! (...Just lately found out I'm more Welsh than I ever knew. That was fun. Dylan Thomas, just for the most obvious one in the room.)

Where attribution is concerned, other people who get lots of slabs (and their coins) insist that some outfits that do this are more responsible than others. My intentionally limited experience runs to slabs that literally say nothing useful about the coin. As in, literally unattributed medievals. I mean, Department of Redundancy Department. I can't get any traction with taking it seriously. (Edit:) Not to mention the esthetics. The slabs invariably, inexorably block parts of both sides of the coin. Not to mention any chance of a side view, which is integral to the total effect of (and information about) a given coin. ...This feels like wallowing in the obvious, but I guess, for some people, not so much. Sulla80 Posted October 29, 2023 · Supporter Share Posted October 29, 2023 (edited) What are those - some kind of micro-green gardener's pots? well - I guess you have to have somewhere to grow them. Great Collections is the only auction house I can think of that would accept a coin like this 🤪. On the other hand, does this mean slabbing all ancient coins is a bad idea 🤔? The coin pictured below I bought from a dealer for $300.00, & later had it slabbed by NGC. I put the coin in Heritage Auction 3061, lot 29421, Jan 7, 2018 where it sold for $3,840 ☺️. Was this a stupid acquisition for $3,840 🤔, was it a smart investment for that kind of money 🤑? The person who paid $3,840 for it put the coin in Heritage Auction 3094, lot 34264, Aug 20, 2021, where it sold for $9,600 😮! Should I have held onto the coin longer, probably, but who could ever guess that the coin would ever fetch that kind of money 🫢. Would that coin ever fetch that kind of money again, I really doubt it, but stranger things have happened..... 9 1 1 1
JayAg47 Posted October 29, 2023 · Member Share Posted October 29, 2023 The plastic that makes the slab is probably worth more than the coin itself! I can definitely see some sleazy sales people selling these on one of those local cable channels in the early hours targeting retirees, somehow connecting these coins to Jesus himself! 1

Slab anything and the price will rocket, as long as you can sell it with a little PT Barnum charm. 2 1
Roman Collector Posted October 30, 2023 · Patron Author Share Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) NEVER trust a TPG service to attribute your coins, either! Look at this new purchase!! Artemis????? Here's the reverse! It's Demeter. DEMETER. Demeter with two torches. Demeter-Phosphoros. Ceres-Taedifera in Latin. I'm taking a hammer to this one as soon as it arrives in the mail!!
