Septimius Severus Eastern IMP VIII - taking stock of my collection.

One of my sub-collections is the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus generally ending in the eastern IMP VIII issue.

The standard obverse legend for this issue is L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII. RIC notes one example with the obverse legend  L SEPT SEVER PERT AVG IMP VIII. I keep a keen eye out for these oddities and add them to my IMP VIII collection whenever I can find them.

The British Museum has a fantastic collection of IMP VIII coins and I use this as my baseline reference for what is published as existing. The following is a list of what is is the BM collection. I thought it would be worthwhile for me to have a look at how my collection is developing , comparing myself to the BM collection. The following is a list of the coins represented in either the BM collection or my own collection.

Green = in BM collection and represented in my collection
Red = in BM collection but missing from my collection
Blue = missing from BM collection but represented in my collection

I have not performed this comparison before and it was only because I am building my IMP VIII website that I performed this exercise. I was rather surprised to see that my collection holds up rather well when compared to the BM collection. I have three gaps compared to the BM in my SEPT collection and the three SEVER types that the BM has are missing from my collection but conversely I have 10 SEVER types that are not represented in the BM.

This has made me even more determined to fill those gaps.

Nice! Would you happen to have a group shot of all the coins together?

Also, I wonder something. Was the BM also actively collecting imp VIII issues? Or is it by chance that they have so many specimens?

The BM collection of this issue has developed through donations and acquisitions over the last century or so. They have the most complete public collection of the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. I am not sure that they actively collect anything....

I do have galleries containing my collection outlined above including some type duplicates.

I have been looking though my trays and am uncovering some coins that I have bought over the years but were missing from my records. Here is one relevant to this thread.

Obv:–L SEPT SEV PE-RT AVG IMP VIII, Laureate head right
Rev:– M-ONFT (sic) AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 196 - 197
Reference:– RIC 484(a) var

The engraver has malformed the E in Monet. Not worty of it's own reference but worth of note.
