Topcat7 Posted March 22, 2023 · Member Posted March 22, 2023 (edited) The seller described this coin as :- Ptolemaic Egypt, Kyrene Mint, Time of Ptolemy IX-X. c.116-88 BC. Obv: Diademed head of Ptolemy I right. Rev: Head of female (Libya) right 11 mm., 1.34 gm. I have tried my reference material and I cannot find the coin anywhere (from the Ptolemaic Kingdom). Can anyone help me, please? Edited March 22, 2023 by Topcat7 4 Quote
O-Towner Posted March 22, 2023 · Member Posted March 22, 2023 A confusing issue as I've seen it listed as Ptolemy II, Ptolemy III, Ptolemy V and Ptolemy IX. A small lot of these came to the market about a year or so ago. I think Ptolemy III (Svoronos 869) may be the flavor of the month. 1 Quote
Edessa Posted March 23, 2023 · Supporter Posted March 23, 2023 In Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire (Part 1 - Bronze), Lorber lists this chalkous as B489 under Ptolemy III. But for this group of bronze issues she also notes "Their production probably continued into the reign of Ptolemy IV and possibly much later". The identifying mark is a single cornucopia oriented to the right under Libya's chin. Quote
Broucheion Posted March 23, 2023 · Member Posted March 23, 2023 Hi @O-Towner, Take a look at http://ptolemybronze.com/ptolemy_series.html under the section “ Ptolemy VI - IX - Kyrene”. It’s usual to consider the cruder issues as later in date. - Broucheion 1 Quote
