Rasilon Posted September 22, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 22, 2022 Hello, I was recently eyeing this denarius of Nero in an auction but ultimately decided to give it a pass. I couldn't really put my finger on what bothered me about it but I just had a bad feel about it. The only things that I could possibly point to were: - the apparent raised crack line on the obverse running from the side of the M in "IMP" (6:00) up to Nero's chin. I think it just reminded me of coins I've seen in "known fakes" forums. - The pair of indents on the edge of the coin at approximately 5:00. I am curious to know what others think. Thanks, Rasilon 1 1
Romismatist Posted September 23, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 23, 2022 I actually think it looks genuine, based on the wear, strike, style and patina. The notches on the edge are a red herring, and in my mind nothing to be concerned about.
Kali Posted September 23, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 23, 2022 Common coin, but looks fine. No worries. 3
Benefactor Egry Posted September 27, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted September 27, 2022 Looks real to me, just a bit clapped-out as per the majority of Nero denarii
Al Kowsky Posted September 27, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 27, 2022 I agree with the other website members, there is nothing about the photos you posted that screams fake. Pictured below are two cast fake Nero coins in my collection, a denarius & tetradrachm. 4 1
