    Bad Emperor

After acquiring a couple of Antoninus bronzes I thought I should have a bad emperor as well. Got it this morning. A damnatio memoriae was undertaken against Carinus after his death, removing his name and image from as many works of literature and art as possible while also destroying statues of him. CARINUS. Æ. Antoninian. Aequitas. 283-284 AD IMP CM AVR CARINVS AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right AEQVITAS AVGG, Aequitas, standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, A in right field Lyons mint. RIC V-2, 212 2.88 g. 22 mm. (VF +). Brown patina
  3. I am a late entrant into this hobby. 4 years ago my Father in Law showed me his collection, I knew he collected but I had never seen them. He and his Father were both Ofiicers in the Norwegian Merchant Navy and collected coins from all the countries they docked at and had shore leave. His collection was over 3000 world coins half of which are Norwegian. That year he gave me for Xmas an 1883 CC Morgan Dollar in GSA holder with COA and packaging. The following year he sadly passed. I was shocked to discover he had left me his collection in his will. I was sure it would go to one of his 2 daughters. Since then I have been slowly adding to it as I learn more about the subject. However, it has considerably slowed as I have been hit with a sledgehammer called Ancient coins. A few months ago I was a fortunate winner of a competition. This is what I won Now I can see the obvious adoration in all your posts about a subject I just skimmed past before. I hope one day to have a fraction of your knowledge, but I love them as much as you do already.
  4. Thanks for sharing that remarkable piece

  7. That coloration is eye pleasing for sure
  8. It is not a deliberate thing, the larger bronzes. Whatever catches my eye at the moment is what I get. Yours is a nice looking coin
  9. As I slowly progress in this addictive and fascinating genre of collecting, I have added some more to my small selection. I do not as yet have a fixed path to follow, so am acquiring an assorted collection. I love just holding such history, it is more important to me than strike quality and value. So, to today's arrival, Lucilla 164 – 169 AD AE As Struck in Rome OBVERSE LVCILLAE AVGVSTAE: Bust of Lucilla, hair waved and fastened in a low chignon at back of head, draped, right REVERSE HILARITAS S Hilaritas, draped, standing left, holding long palm, nearly vertical, in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand Green patina 9.46 g. 27 mm RIC. 1741 (from Marco Aurelio)

  20. OK, I just put this in a new flip so listened to it
  21. The 4th I could possibly be a striking anomaly, there appears to be a feint partial impression in the correct place. The first example on the link shows a similar weakness in that general area. https://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.3.ant.155_denarius?lang=en
  22. Wonderful write up and a great selection of coins everyone. As a newcomer I just love the variety of coins being shown on this site.
  23. Antoninus Pius The Senate gave him the title ''Pius'' (meaning ''dutiful'') either because he had Hadrian declared a god, or because he freed Senators whom Hadrian had planned to execute. He may not have even wanted the job of emperor, as he took time to accept it. After becoming ruler, when his wife Faustina said he was too frugal, Antoninus replied, ''Foolish woman, now that we have gained an empire, we have lost even what we had before.'' He then returned most of the gold given to him as gifts.
