  1. Great work, and as usual, superb photography! Thanks for sharing!
  2. Outstanding! Fit for a museum. 🙂
  3. Stunning coin!! I'm guilty of the same impulse - when I read something historical I find fascinating, I like to see what coins/artifacts are available from that time. Sort of connects you to the past in a very tangible way.
  4. I don't think I've posted this one here. My oldest coin:
  5. I wonder what exactly made it illegal for the guy to buy and possess it? Was it a looted artifact?
  6. I'm also a little confused about the topic, but it sounds interesting! Any clarification, @JayAg47 ?
  7. This just came in today. Kind of the British Empire: Numista has this to say: "This was the first official (government-approved) coin of Nova Scotia. The reverse design, a sprig of mayflower, is now the provincial flower and is considered one of the most beautiful coins made for North America." I have to say I agree! If there is a coin with a more beautifully done portrait of Victoria, I have yet to see it; and the reverse design is also nicely balanced and wonderfully executed. The low-ish mintage adds appeal as well. A winner all around!
  8. Wow that is something I can only dream of doing someday! Beautiful photos, @kirispupis!!! I love the artistry and detail on these 1 oz. silver bullion coins:
  9. Here are a few more: Jaguar African fish eagle Greater Kudu
  10. @kirispupis Those are beautiful photos! I like to do pencil drawings of the same animals. 🙂
  11. Here is a new addition, purchased on eBay. It was supposed to be an 1840 East India Company rupee, but the seller accidentally sent this instead. We messaged back and forth about it, and we were both fine with leaving it as is and calling it even.
  12. I'm more thinking about the reverse.
  13. Here is a new one. I had wanted one of these Alexander portrait coins for a little while, but did not feel like committing the money for a tetradrachm. This drachm - somewhat pitted and porous, with a test cut - brought it within reach of my budget. What do you all think? An okay purchase for $70? Apparently, this reverse variation - with the bee facing right instead of left - is somewhat rare, according to CNG (see below). And here is the CNG example. (Is it a die match?)
  14. I have been re-reading Arthur H. Neumann's excellent book Elephant Hunting in East Equatorial Africa, published in 1898. Neumann worked for a short time for the IBEA Company, and later Mombasa was his jumping-off place for his ivory hunting expeditions. This coin is a somewhat scarce type, and definitely the lowest-mintage coin in my collection. (94,000)
  15. @akeady WOW! I absolutely LOVE the perspective on that bottom coin/medal! That is remarkable!
  16. Even those who guess some wrong have a chance. You just get a better chance of winning if you manage to get all 15. 🙂
  17. One question: does the word "cob" refer only to Spanish colonial coins of this type, or does it apply to all of them, including those struck in Spain itself?
  18. UPDATE! I was advised to contact Daniel Sedwick about it - he is probably the foremost expert on this type of coinage - so I sent him an email with photos and here is what he had to say: "Looks OK [as far as authenticity] and your description [Felipe II one-reale] is accurate, Seville mint (Spain). Might be clipped or shaved around the edge. Not very high in value." Wow! I am pretty happy about that! This would date it from 1556 to 1598. Not bad for a group lot find!
  19. That does look like the best match I've seen so far. And the size/weight seem to line up.
  20. I got this one in a group lot containing mostly small, old silver coins. It looks like a Spanish "cob" coin of some sort but I am having difficulty finding more exact information. The maximum diameter is 21.38mm, and the weight is 3.00 grams. (Weighed by me.) I'm also wondering if it is genuine since there are a couple poor "replica" or "fantasy" coins in the lot as well - this one seems fine as far as I can tell but I'm not experienced enough to be able to know for sure. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!
