  1. That is a sweet example by the way, is that gold or bronze?
  2. Great to see you again! I have a bunch of these coins and know little to nothing about them so I'm always glad to see more posts about Trachys. John
  3. Curtis, That is such a beautiful coin. Love the gold and blue toning around the devices. Is that a test mark on the reverse? John
  4. They dared us to do it, you answered the call! What can we do to help? John
  5. Sicily, Leontini AR Tetradrachm, 450-430 BC, 17.18g Obverse: Fine archaic style laureate head of Apollo right. Reverse: Lion head right surrounded by four barley corns, LEONTININ around. References: SNG ANS 247. NEXT: Another Lion.
  6. That is a great coin and interesting history. Pretty cool that his four-volume history survived. Is your coin overstruck? I too once thought of collecting all the emperors and empresses. Ha ha. John
  7. I have been listening to violin concertos lately, just for a change of pace from classic rock, alternative, etc. I have been watching a lot of TwoSetViolin videos on youtube because I find them amusing and relaxing but also educational. I realized I have a Greek coin that belonged to Jascha Heifetz, the famous violinist. I love coins from Syracuse and could not resist this obvious homage to their famous types. Hard to believe I have had this coin for 32 years... Campania, Neapolis. AR Nomos, 380-350 BC. Obverse: Diademed head of nymph right surrounded by three dolphins. Reverse: [N]EOΠOΛITΩN, man-headed bull walking right, head facing; above, Nike flying right, crowning bull with wreath. References: SNG ANS 335 Ex 1989 Jascha Heifetz sale Part 2, #2336. Ex 1990 Fred Shore Do you have any coins with a musical tie-in of any kind? John
  8. Hey @Alegandron I find cool new types every time I start browsing World coins. So many countries and 500? years or so of history. Not sure what the conventional cut-off date is between Medieval and World? John
  9. Last one for today: 1947 Panama 1 Balboa - Vasco Nunez de Balboa – Silver (KM-13) Look at all the Roman motifs on the reverse. A beautiful and large coin for less than $100. I really know little about World coins so there is a lot of exciting new stuff to learn. John
  10. Here is another one: Germany. Frankfurt. Vereinstaler 1860. Dav. 649. I love the detailed engraving of her hair and shawl. Her expression reminds me of some of the Syracuse tetradrachms. John
  11. I have gotten really interested in crown sized world silver. There are so many artistic types and they are reasonably affordable. I am going to try to cut and paste my picture and text catalog entry directly from Word. AUSTRIA, ERZHERZOG LEOPOLD AR TALER Davenport 3338b, Very Fine, 42.3mm, 28.43 grams, 1632, Hall mint Well struck with moderate even wear, and a scarcer variety with BVRGVN not ending with "I" on reverse. OK, looks like you can cut and paste images separately from text, but not a mixture, which is fine. John
  12. Yay TIF is on! Love the shield with the elephant, that is the boss type. Johm

    Seleucids

The head of Artemis wearing a stephane is a pretty scarce type in the Seleucid series, which made it easier to spot. I started with the assumption the reverse was Nike and wasn't having any luck. Then I just started paging through Hoover and just randomly found it. Lol. So no great skill involved. I really like the patina on this type and it seems pretty common for coins from that region. John
